Beyond the basic four parameters, testing for general hardness and carbonate hardness is highly recommended for Twig Catfish. These fish prefer soft to moderately soft water with a GH of four to twelve degrees and a KH sufficient to maintain stable pH. A dedicated GH and KH test kit helps you understand your tap water's baseline and determine whether you need to supplement or modify hardness levels.
Water conditioners and dechlorinators are non-negotiable supplies for any tank receiving municipal tap water. Choose a conditioner that neutralizes both chlorine and chloramine, as many municipal water systems use chloramine, which is more persistent and more harmful to sensitive fish. Some conditioners also bind heavy metals and detoxify small amounts of ammonia, providing an extra layer of protection during water changes.
Keeping a supply of buffer products on hand is wise for Twig Catfish keepers whose tap water has low carbonate hardness. A KH below three degrees can lead to sudden pH crashes, particularly in planted tanks where CO2 fluctuations throughout the day can swing the pH dramatically. A gentle alkalinity buffer that raises KH without significantly affecting GH helps maintain the stable conditions these catfish need.
