Algae wafers designed for bottom-feeding herbivores can serve as a useful supplement to the staple granule or flake. When dropped among the rocks, they slowly soften and allow fish to pick at them over a period of minutes, reinforcing natural grazing behavior. While scientific evidence for the antiparasitic claims is limited, garlic does appear to act as a feeding stimulant for many fish species, and Tropheus are no exception. A garlic supplement can be particularly useful when introducing new fish to a colony, as the stress of transition sometimes suppresses appetite. A small amount of liquid garlic extract soaked into the staple food before feeding can encourage reluctant eaters to resume normal feeding behavior.

Foods to Avoid

The single most important dietary rule for Tropheus keepers is to avoid high-protein, high-fat foods — particularly those containing animal-derived proteins as primary ingredients. Bloodworms, tubifex worms, brine shrimp, and beefheart are all commonly used in the broader cichlid hobby but are dangerous for Tropheus. These foods can trigger a catastrophic intestinal condition commonly called Tropheus bloat, which presents as abdominal swelling, loss of appetite, white stringy feces, and rapid deterioration. Omnivore and carnivore cichlid formulas designed for species like Oscars, Frontosa, or many Malawi haps are entirely inappropriate. Even some foods marketed for African cichlids broadly may be formulated around the dietary needs of Mbuna or Peacocks and carry fat levels that exceed what Tropheus can safely process. Live foods present additional risks beyond their nutritional profile. Feeder fish, live worms, and live brine shrimp can introduce parasites, bacteria, and other pathogens into the aquarium. Given that Tropheus are already more susceptible to intestinal issues than most cichlid species, the parasite risk compounds an already unfavorable nutritional picture. There is simply no reason to offer live animal-based foods to a species that neither requires nor benefits from them.

Stale, expired, or improperly stored food is another hazard that deserves mention. Spirulina and other algae-based ingredients oxidize and lose potency when exposed to air, light, and heat over time. Feeding degraded food means the fish receive fewer nutrients per gram, and oxidized fats in old food may contribute to liver stress. The feeding chamber should be loaded with the same high-quality spirulina-based staple food used during manual feedings, and the portion size should be calibrated so that the fish consume everything within a couple of minutes. Automatic feeders also help maintain a consistent daily rhythm, which can reduce stress-related aggression in the colony.

Fasting one day per week is a practice some Tropheus keepers swear by, arguing that it gives the long intestinal tract a chance to fully clear and reset. Others maintain that consistent daily feeding is preferable for a species that grazes constantly in nature. Both approaches have produced healthy, long-lived colonies, so this is largely a matter of personal preference and observation. If your fish show signs of digestive discomfort or bloating, a periodic fast day may be worth incorporating.

Juvenile Tropheus have higher metabolic demands relative to their body size and should be fed more frequently than adults — four to six small feedings per day supports healthy growth rates. As fish mature and reach adult size, the frequency can be gradually reduced to three or four feedings daily. Regardless of age, consistency is more important than any specific schedule. Erratic feeding patterns — heavy one day, skipped the next — create stress and can trigger the digestive problems that Tropheus are notoriously prone to.
