Freeze-dried options sit between frozen and dry foods in terms of convenience. They are shelf-stable and easy to portion, though they lack the moisture content of frozen alternatives. Treats & Supplements

Blanched vegetables make surprisingly effective treats for Tiger Barbs and address the herbivorous side of their omnivorous diet. Small pieces of zucchini, shelled peas, and spinach are all readily accepted once the fish learn to recognize them as food. Processed meats, cheese, and dairy products are equally inappropriate. Fish lack the enzymes needed to digest mammalian fats and proteins effectively, and the oils from these foods create a surface film that impairs gas exchange at the water surface. Even small quantities can cause lasting water quality problems in enclosed aquarium systems.

Low-quality commercial foods loaded with artificial fillers, dyes, and preservatives should be avoided as a staple diet. While a single feeding of an inferior food is unlikely to cause harm, chronic use leads to poor coloration, weakened immune response, and increased susceptibility to disease. The cost difference between a bargain food and a quality formula is negligible over the life of the product, making cheap food a false economy.
