Thai Micro Crabs (Limnopilos naiyanetri) are tiny freshwater crustaceans that rely on a combination of filter feeding and surface grazing to meet their dietary needs. In the wild, they cling to submerged roots and vegetation, using their fan-like setae to catch suspended microorganisms, biofilm, and fine organic detritus from the water column. Understanding this dual feeding strategy is the foundation of keeping them well nourished in captivity.
Because of their minuscule size, Thai Micro Crabs have extremely low caloric requirements, but those calories must come from nutrient-dense sources. They need a balanced intake of proteins for molting and exoskeleton development, carbohydrates for energy, and trace minerals — particularly calcium and iodine — for healthy shell formation. An environment that lacks biofilm or suspended particulates will leave them malnourished even when other food is present in the tank.
One of the most common mistakes keepers make is assuming these crabs can thrive on leftover fish food alone. Standard flakes and pellets are often far too large for the crabs to consume and may foul the water before they can be broken down. A deliberate feeding plan that accounts for particle size, water-column delivery, and biofilm cultivation is essential.
It is also worth noting that Thai Micro Crabs are fully aquatic and cannot be fed outside of water. Every food source must either dissolve or remain suspended long enough for the crabs to intercept it, or it must promote the growth of biofilm surfaces that the crabs can graze directly.
