The minimum recommended tank size for a small group of Swordtails is 20 gallons, though a 29-gallon or larger tank is preferable for a community setup. Males in particular are constant movers, patrolling the length of the tank and displaying to females, so a longer footprint is far more important than height.

Rimless aquariums have gained popularity for their sleek, modern appearance and unobstructed viewing angles. They work well for Swordtail setups, but require careful placement on a perfectly level surface and a dedicated aquarium mat to distribute weight evenly. The aesthetic appeal is undeniable, though the higher price point makes them better suited for display tanks than utility breeding setups.

Acrylic tanks offer some advantages over glass, including lighter weight and greater impact resistance, which can matter for larger setups or tanks placed on upper floors. Planted substrates enriched with nutrients support live plant growth, which benefits Swordtails in multiple ways. Plants provide cover for females escaping male attention, shelter for fry, and natural surfaces for algae and biofilm grazing. Substrates designed for planted aquariums typically buffer toward slightly acidic conditions, so monitor pH and hardness to ensure they remain within the moderately alkaline range that Swordtails prefer.

Sand substrates offer a clean, natural look and are easy for bottom-dwelling tankmates to navigate. However, sand can compact over time and develop anaerobic pockets if not periodically disturbed. If using sand in a Swordtail tank, choose a grain size that allows some water flow through the upper layer and consider adding Malaysian trumpet snails, which naturally aerate the substrate as they burrow.

Aquascaping with driftwood, rocks, and live or silk plants creates the environmental complexity that makes a Swordtail tank both functional and visually engaging. Arrange hardscape to create swimming lanes along the front and sides while providing dense planted areas toward the back and corners. This layout gives Swordtails open water for swimming and display while offering retreat zones for subordinate fish and gravid females.

Heating & Temperature Control

Swordtails thrive in water temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with a sweet spot around 75 to 78 degrees for most community setups. A reliable submersible heater is essential in any environment where room temperature fluctuates, which includes most homes during seasonal transitions. Choose a heater rated at approximately three to five watts per gallon to ensure it can maintain stable temperatures without cycling excessively.

Adjustable submersible heaters with built-in thermostats offer the most control and are the standard recommendation for Swordtail tanks. Position the heater near the filter outflow so that heated water circulates evenly throughout the tank, preventing thermal gradients where one end is significantly warmer than the other. Placing the heater horizontally near the bottom of the tank can also improve heat distribution.

For larger tanks or setups in particularly cold rooms, using two smaller heaters instead of one large unit provides both redundancy and more even heating. If one heater fails, the second continues to maintain a safe temperature while you arrange a replacement. This approach also reduces the risk of a stuck-on heater overheating the tank, since neither unit alone has enough wattage to raise the temperature dangerously.

Lighting in a Swordtail tank serves both practical and aesthetic purposes. A standard LED aquarium light with a color temperature between 6,500 and 8,000 Kelvin provides a natural daylight appearance that enhances fish coloration and supports live plant growth. LED fixtures are energy-efficient, generate minimal heat, and are available in a wide range of sizes to fit virtually any tank configuration.

Photoperiod management is straightforward for Swordtails. A consistent schedule of eight to ten hours of light per day closely mimics natural tropical conditions and supports healthy circadian rhythms. Using an inexpensive plug-in timer to automate the light cycle eliminates the inconsistency of manual switching and prevents the extended light periods that promote excessive algae growth.

If the tank includes live plants, light intensity becomes an additional consideration.
