The general guideline of three to five watts per gallon provides a reasonable starting point, so a twenty-gallon Serpae Tetra tank typically needs a heater rated between seventy-five and one hundred watts. In rooms with significant temperature swings, slightly oversizing the heater or using two smaller units provides better temperature stability and built-in redundancy.
Heater placement affects both performance and safety. Position the heater near the filter output or a circulation point so that heated water is distributed evenly throughout the tank rather than creating a warm zone around the heater and cooler areas elsewhere. Fully submersible heaters can be mounted horizontally near the bottom of the tank for more even heat distribution, though vertical mounting works adequately in most setups. Always use a heater guard or protective cage if the Serpae Tetras show any tendency to rest against the heater tube, as direct contact with the heating element can cause burns.
An independent thermometer is essential for verifying that the heater is maintaining the correct temperature. Dual-heater setups offer significant advantages in tanks of thirty gallons or larger. Running two lower-wattage heaters instead of a single high-wattage unit means that if one heater fails in the "on" position, the remaining unit alone cannot overheat the tank to lethal temperatures. Similarly, if one fails in the "off" position, the other provides enough heat to prevent a dangerous temperature crash. This redundancy is inexpensive insurance against one of the most common causes of catastrophic fish loss in the hobby.
