A powerhead or circulation pump positioned to create a gentle to moderate current along the bottom of the tank gives plecos something to interact with physically, encouraging them to brace against surfaces and navigate flow patterns the way they would in their natural habitat.

Adjustable flow powerheads are the most versatile option because they allow you to dial the current strength up or down based on your pleco's response. Effective pleco enrichment does not require expensive specialty products. Some of the best enrichment items are free or nearly so. A smooth river rock collected from a clean waterway, properly sanitized by boiling for 10 minutes, becomes a grazing surface and territorial marker at no cost. Fallen hardwood branches from pesticide-free areas can be cured and added as driftwood, though they require weeks of soaking to become waterlogged and leach excess tannins.

Terracotta flower pots are a classic DIY pleco cave. A standard unglazed pot laid on its side or partially buried in substrate provides an appropriately sized hiding spot for most pleco species.
