Total dissolved solids meters, commonly called TDS meters, measure the overall concentration of dissolved minerals and salts in the water. While TDS alone does not tell you what is dissolved, it provides a useful proxy for water hardness and can alert you to sudden changes in water composition. For platies, which prefer moderately hard water, a TDS reading that drops unexpectedly might indicate that a mineral buffer is depleted, while a sudden spike could point to contamination or a malfunctioning water treatment system.
The value of continuous monitoring increases with the complexity of the setup and the investment in livestock. For a keeper with a single platy tank, periodic manual testing may be sufficient.
