Heater placement should ensure that warm water circulates throughout the entire tank rather than creating localized hot spots. Positioning the heater near the filter outflow or a circulation pump helps distribute heated water more evenly. A separate thermometer placed at the opposite end of the tank from the heater provides an accurate reading of the actual conditions the fish experience, rather than just the temperature at the heater's sensor.

Water flow is an often-underestimated element of Pictus Catfish housing. These fish come from moderately flowing rivers and are adapted to consistent current. A circulation pump or powerhead positioned to create a gentle but steady flow across the length of the tank encourages natural swimming behavior and improves oxygenation. Multi-Species Community Setup

Pictus Catfish are social fish that do best when kept in groups of three or more of their own kind, and they integrate well into peaceful community tanks with appropriately chosen tankmates. When planning a multi-species setup, the primary consideration is ensuring that all inhabitants occupy compatible zones of the water column and share similar water parameter requirements.

Ideal tankmates include medium-sized, non-aggressive species that inhabit the mid and upper water levels, leaving the bottom tier primarily to the catfish. Larger tetras, peaceful barbs, gouramis, and rainbowfish are all commonly successful companions. Avoid keeping Pictus Catfish with any fish small enough to fit in their mouth, as they are opportunistic predators that will consume smaller tankmates during their nighttime foraging.

Other bottom-dwelling species can coexist with Pictus Catfish if the tank is large enough to provide adequate territory for everyone. Larger Corydoras species, peaceful loaches, and similarly sized catfish can share the substrate level, but there must be sufficient hiding spots and floor space to prevent territorial disputes. Overcrowding the bottom level is one of the most common mistakes in community tank design and leads to stress, aggression, and barbel damage from constant contact.

When stocking a community tank, add the Pictus Catfish after the tank has fully cycled and the other inhabitants are established.
