Tank Size & Space Requirements

Gobies are small fish, but their territorial nature and bottom-dwelling habits mean they need more horizontal floor space than their body size might suggest. A single goby or a pair can often be housed in a tank as small as ten gallons, but larger species and groups require proportionally more room. Prioritize tanks with a wide footprint over tall, narrow designs, since gobies rarely venture into upper water columns and will stake out territories across the substrate.

For small freshwater species like bumblebee gobies or stiphodon gobies, a 10- to 15-gallon tank is a reasonable starting point for a small group. Larger species such as knight gobies or violet gobies need a minimum of 30 gallons, and some marine gobies that form mated pairs benefit from 20 gallons or more to establish comfortable territories without constant aggression.

Overcrowding is one of the most common mistakes with gobies. Because they are bottom-exclusive, the usable living space in any tank is essentially the substrate footprint rather than the total water volume. A tall 20-gallon tank may actually provide less functional space for gobies than a long, shallow 15-gallon tank. When planning your setup, think in terms of square inches of floor space per fish rather than gallons alone.

Leave room for growth and behavioral expression. Gobies that feel cramped become stressed, which leads to aggression, appetite loss, and susceptibility to disease. A slightly larger tank than the minimum recommendation almost always pays dividends in fish health and keeper satisfaction.

Substrate & Bottom Structure

Substrate selection is arguably the most important housing decision for gobies, since these fish spend the vast majority of their lives on or within the bottom layer of the aquarium. Sand is the preferred substrate for most goby species, particularly fine-grain varieties that allow sand-sifting species to engage in their natural feeding behavior. Coarse gravel can injure delicate gill filaments and barbels, and it prevents sifters from processing substrate effectively.

For sand-sifting gobies commonly kept in marine setups, a bed of fine aragonite sand at least two inches deep provides both a functional feeding ground and a natural biological filtration layer. Freshwater species like stiphodon gobies prefer a mix of smooth river sand and small pebbles that mimic the rocky stream beds they inhabit in the wild. Bumblebee gobies and similar brackish species do well on fine sand with scattered shells and rock formations.

Beyond the substrate itself, gobies need an abundance of bottom structure to establish territories, retreat from tankmates, and feel secure. Caves formed from stacked rocks, clay pots, coconut shells, PVC pipe segments, and purpose-built ceramic hides all work well. Provide at least one shelter per goby, with extras to reduce competition. Gobies that lack hiding spots become chronically stressed and may refuse to eat.

Live rock is an excellent addition for marine goby setups, providing both shelter and a self-renewing source of copepods and amphipods that supplement the fish's diet. In freshwater tanks, driftwood and smooth river stones serve a similar structural role while also contributing beneficial tannins and biofilm surfaces.

Filtration & Water Flow

Filtration requirements for gobies depend on the species and tank size, but the guiding principle is effective biological filtration combined with gentle water flow at the substrate level. Gobies are not strong swimmers, and powerful currents along the bottom of the tank will stress them, displace sand, and make feeding difficult. Choose filters that can be adjusted or baffled to reduce flow intensity near the substrate.

Sponge filters are an excellent choice for smaller goby tanks. They provide reliable biological filtration without generating strong currents, and their intake openings are too small to trap tiny gobies or their fry. For larger setups, hang-on-back filters or canister filters work well when paired with a spray bar or flow diffuser that spreads the return current across the water surface rather than directing it downward.

In marine goby tanks, a refugium or sump-based filtration system offers the added benefit of cultivating live copepod and amphipod populations that naturally migrate into the display tank as a supplemental food source. Protein skimmers are also important for marine setups, helping maintain the pristine water quality that reef-associated gobies require.

Regardless of filter type, maintain a stable nitrogen cycle and perform regular water changes of 15 to 25 percent weekly. Gobies are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes, and even moderate nitrate accumulation can cause health problems over time. Test water parameters regularly, especially during the first few months after setting up a new tank or adding new fish.

Lighting & Environment

Most gobies are not demanding when it comes to lighting, but the type and intensity of light you provide should match the overall environment you are trying to create. In planted freshwater tanks housing stiphodon or rhinogobius species, moderate to high lighting supports the algae and biofilm growth these gobies graze on. In marine setups with corals and live rock, lighting should be selected primarily for coral health, as the gobies themselves are indifferent to light intensity.

For tanks without live plants or corals, standard LED aquarium lights on a timer providing 8 to 10 hours of light per day are perfectly adequate. Avoid excessively bright lighting in tanks with sparse cover, as this can make bottom-dwelling gobies feel exposed and insecure. If your gobies seem to hide constantly under bright lights, adding floating plants or dimming the fixture often resolves the issue.

Beyond lighting, the overall environment should be designed to make gobies feel secure while still allowing you to observe them. A background on the rear and side glass panels reduces the sense of exposure. Live or artificial plants provide additional cover and visual barriers that help gobies establish territories without constant line-of-sight aggression toward neighbors.

Water clarity is also worth considering from an environmental standpoint. Gobies are visual hunters and foragers, and excessively turbid or tannin-stained water can interfere with their ability to locate food. While a slight tint from driftwood is harmless and even beneficial for some species, heavy blackwater conditions are generally not ideal for most gobies.

Water Parameters & Climate Control

Gobies span an enormous range of natural habitats, so the correct water parameters depend entirely on which species you are keeping. Freshwater gobies typically thrive in temperatures between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH of 6.8 to 7.6. Brackish species like bumblebee gobies require the addition of marine salt to achieve a specific gravity between 1.005 and 1.015, along with slightly alkaline pH values of 7.5 to 8.2. Marine gobies need full saltwater conditions at 1.023 to 1.025 specific gravity with stable pH between 8.0 and 8.4.

Temperature stability is more important than hitting an exact number within the acceptable range. Invest in a reliable submersible heater with an accurate thermostat, and consider using a separate digital thermometer to verify the heater's reading. Sudden temperature swings of even two or three degrees can trigger stress responses, immune suppression, and disease outbreaks in gobies.

For brackish and marine species, a quality hydrometer or digital refractometer is essential for monitoring salinity. Evaporation concentrates dissolved salts, so top off with fresh dechlorinated water rather than saltwater to maintain consistent salinity levels. Automated top-off systems can take the guesswork out of this process in larger setups.

Hardness and mineral content matter as well. Many freshwater gobies originate from mineral-rich streams and do poorly in very soft, acidic water. Conversely, some stream-dwelling species prefer moderate flow and well-oxygenated water, making an air stone or powerhead a worthwhile addition. Research the specific requirements of your goby species before finalizing your water parameter targets.

Multi-Species & Community Setups

Gobies can be excellent community fish when paired with appropriate tankmates, but their bottom-dwelling lifestyle and territorial tendencies require some planning. The best tankmates are peaceful species that occupy the middle and upper water columns, leaving the substrate to the gobies. Small tetras, rasboras, livebearers, and peaceful dwarf cichlids are all common companions in freshwater goby tanks. In marine setups, clownfish, cardinalfish, and small wrasses generally coexist well with gobies.

Avoid housing gobies with other aggressive bottom-dwellers that will compete for the same substrate territory. Large cichlids, aggressive catfish, and territorial loaches can bully gobies away from food and shelter, leading to chronic stress and decline. Similarly, very fast or aggressive mid-water fish may outcompete gobies at feeding time, since gobies are relatively slow and deliberate feeders.

Keeping multiple gobies together requires careful attention to tank size and the number of available hiding spots. Many goby species form dominance hierarchies, and subordinate individuals need escape routes and shelters where they can retreat from dominant fish. Providing more caves and hiding spots than there are gobies helps distribute territorial pressure and reduces aggression.

If you plan to breed gobies, a dedicated species tank is usually the best approach. Breeding pairs become highly territorial and will aggressively defend their chosen nesting site against all other bottom-dwelling fish. The fry are extremely small and vulnerable, making them easy targets for even the most peaceful community tankmates. A separate breeding setup gives you much greater control over water conditions, feeding, and fry survival.
