Temperature fluctuations of more than two degrees within a 24-hour period can trigger stress responses including loss of appetite, color fading, and increased susceptibility to disease. A reliable, adjustable aquarium heater is one of the most important pieces of equipment in any Glass Catfish setup.

For tanks of 30 to 55 gallons, a single submersible heater rated at approximately three to five watts per gallon provides sufficient heating capacity. In tanks larger than 55 gallons, using two smaller heaters placed at opposite ends of the aquarium ensures more even heat distribution and provides a safety net if one heater fails. Bright overhead lighting causes these fish to retreat into cover and remain hidden for most of the day, which defeats the purpose of keeping such a visually unique species. A moderate to low-intensity LED fixture that allows dimming or programmable intensity control is the ideal choice.

Floating plants are one of the most effective and natural ways to diffuse aquarium lighting for Glass Catfish. Species like water lettuce, salvinia, Amazon frogbit, and red root floaters create a dappled light effect that closely resembles the fish's natural habitat. A surface coverage of roughly fifty to seventy percent provides the right balance between shade for the fish and light penetration for rooted plants below.

If your planted tank requires higher light levels to support demanding plant species, consider using a lighting fixture with adjustable spectrum settings. Shifting toward warmer color temperatures in the 3000 to 5000 Kelvin range during peak hours, and reducing intensity during morning and evening periods, helps create a lighting cycle that accommodates both plants and fish.

Avoid sudden light changes, such as flipping the tank lights on in a dark room. Glass Catfish startle easily, and abrupt transitions from darkness to full brightness can cause panic dashes that result in collisions with tank walls or decorations. A gradual sunrise and sunset ramp, which most modern LED controllers support, eases the fish into and out of their active period without causing alarm.

Community Tank Considerations

Glass Catfish are peaceful community fish that coexist well with other calm, similarly sized species. Ideal tankmates include small tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, otocinclus, and peaceful dwarf gouramis. The key principle is to avoid any species that is aggressive, territorial, or large enough to view Glass Catfish as potential prey.

Aggressive or highly active species such as tiger barbs, large cichlids, and predatory catfish should be strictly avoided. Even moderately nippy species can terrorize a Glass Catfish school into permanent hiding, where they will refuse to eat and slowly decline. When in doubt, err on the side of choosing the most docile tankmates available.

When stocking a community tank, plan the layout so that each species has access to its preferred zone without constant competition.
