A single adult Frontosa needs a minimum of 75 gallons, but because these fish are best kept in groups of six or more, a realistic starting point for a proper colony is 180 gallons or larger. Anything smaller creates territorial stress and limits the natural social hierarchy that keeps aggression in check.

Tank dimensions matter as much as total volume. Frontosa inhabit the deep, open water zones of Lake Tanganyika, and they need both horizontal swimming space and vertical depth. A standard six-foot tank with front-to-back depth of at least 24 inches is ideal. Tall, narrow tanks may meet gallon requirements on paper but fail to provide the floor space needed for territorial boundaries between individuals. Aragonite sand is a popular choice because it also serves as a pH buffer, slowly dissolving to help maintain the alkaline conditions Frontosa require. Coarse gravel can trap waste and is more difficult to keep clean in a tank with heavy-feeding carnivores.

Rock structures are essential for creating the territorial boundaries and shelter that Frontosa need to feel secure. Large, smooth boulders and stacked rock formations provide caves and overhangs where individual fish or pairs can claim territory. The rock should be arranged to create multiple distinct hiding areas spaced across the tank's length, allowing subordinate fish to retreat from dominant individuals. Lighting for a Frontosa tank should be subdued compared to a typical tropical aquarium. These fish originate from depths of 30 to 170 feet in Lake Tanganyika, where ambient light is significantly dimmer than at the surface. Bright overhead lighting causes stress, washed-out coloring, and reclusive behavior. LED fixtures with adjustable intensity and color temperature allow keepers to dial in a comfortable light level — a cool, bluish tone at moderate intensity tends to bring out the best contrast in Frontosa's blue and black banding.

A gradual dawn-to-dusk lighting cycle using a timer or programmable LED controller reduces the startle response that Frontosa display when lights switch on or off abruptly. Sudden changes from dark to bright cause these fish to dart into cover and can result in injuries from collisions with rock structures. A ramp-up period of 15 to 30 minutes simulates natural light transitions and keeps the fish calm during the transition.

Background color and placement influence how secure the fish feel in the tank. A dark background — solid black or dark blue — on the rear glass reduces reflections and gives the fish a visual boundary that prevents the disorienting effect of seeing activity behind the tank. Room placement is an often-overlooked environmental factor. Tanks positioned in high-traffic areas, near doorways, or adjacent to speakers or televisions expose Frontosa to vibrations and sudden movements that keep them in a state of low-grade stress. A quieter location against an interior wall, away from direct sunlight and household commotion, provides the calm environment these deep-water fish need to display their natural behavior and full coloration.

Water Chemistry & Temperature Control

Frontosa require hard, alkaline water that replicates the chemistry of Lake Tanganyika. The target pH range is 7.8 to 9.0, with 8.2 to 8.6 being the sweet spot most keepers aim for. General hardness should fall between 12 and 20 dGH, and carbonate hardness between 15 and 25 dKH. These parameters are non-negotiable — Frontosa kept in soft, acidic water develop health problems, lose color, and have significantly shortened lifespans. Rift lake salt mixes and mineral buffers designed for Tanganyikan cichlids make achieving and maintaining these parameters straightforward.

Temperature should be maintained between 76 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with 78 degrees representing a comfortable midpoint. Multi-Fish Setups & Tankmates

Frontosa are colonial fish that function best in groups of six or more, with a ratio of one male to four or five females being the most stable social arrangement. Single Frontosa or pairs kept in isolation often become reclusive, stressed, and fail to display the confident, open-water behavior that makes the species so appealing. The group dynamic distributes aggression, establishes a natural hierarchy, and encourages the fish to occupy the open areas of the tank rather than hiding permanently in rockwork.

Tankmate selection requires careful thought because Frontosa occupy a specific niche that is easily disrupted by incompatible species. Fish that are too small will eventually become prey — Frontosa are patient predators that will consume anything that fits in their substantial mouths. Overly aggressive or hyperactive tankmates stress Frontosa and monopolize food during feeding time, which can lead to malnutrition in the slower-moving fish. The best companions are similarly sized, moderately tempered Tanganyikan species that occupy different zones of the tank.

Large Tanganyikan cichlids such as certain Cyprichromis species for the upper water column, or robust Synodontis catfish for the substrate, make compatible tankmates that complement rather than compete with Frontosa. Mixing Frontosa with mbuna or other highly aggressive cichlid groups is generally inadvisable — the relentless energy of mbuna overwhelms Frontosa and leads to chronic stress, fin damage, and suppressed feeding.

When adding new fish to an established Frontosa colony, quarantine is essential. Introducing a sick or parasitized fish into a tank of healthy Frontosa can devastate the entire group. New arrivals should be quarantined for a minimum of four weeks in a separate system and observed for signs of disease before being added to the display tank. Rearranging rockwork during the introduction process disrupts established territories and reduces aggression toward the newcomer, giving it a better chance of integrating peacefully into the colony.
