Because these amphibians absorb water directly through their skin, water quality issues that might go unnoticed in a fish tank can quickly become health emergencies in an amphibian enclosure. A liquid-based master test kit that measures ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH is the minimum standard every keeper should own. Liquid reagent kits are significantly more accurate than paper dip strips and provide consistent, readable results that allow you to track trends over time.
Beyond the core four parameters, a general hardness and carbonate hardness test kit can help you fine-tune your water chemistry for optimal amphibian health. Fire Belly Newts prefer moderately soft to neutral water, and knowing your tap water's baseline hardness helps you decide whether buffering or softening agents are necessary. If your municipal water supply fluctuates seasonally—as many do—periodic testing of source water before treatment gives you a heads-up on changes that could affect your enclosure.
A quality siphon or gravel vacuum is the workhorse of tank maintenance. These simple devices allow you to drain water for changes while simultaneously removing debris from the substrate, feeding areas, and hard-to-reach corners. Look for a siphon with a squeeze-bulb or self-starting mechanism, as models that require sucking on the tube to initiate flow are both unsanitary and impractical. A siphon diameter of about half an inch is ideal for most newt tanks—large enough to move water efficiently but small enough to control precisely around delicate plants and hiding spots.
Extra buckets, measuring cups, and storage containers dedicated exclusively to aquarium use round out the maintenance toolkit. Never use containers that have held soap, cleaning products, or chemicals for aquarium water, as residues are nearly impossible to remove completely and can be fatal to amphibians.
