While test strips offer convenience, they are less accurate and more prone to misreading than liquid kits, making them a poor primary testing tool for a sensitive species.
Cichlid-specific mineral buffers and salt mixes are essential if your tap water does not naturally replicate Lake Malawi conditions. These products raise pH, general hardness, and carbonate hardness to the alkaline, mineral-rich levels that Electric Yellows require. Dose carefully according to the manufacturer's instructions, and test the water after each addition to avoid overshooting your targets. It is far safer to make gradual adjustments over several days than to swing the chemistry dramatically in a single dose.
A quality water conditioner that neutralizes chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals should be used every time you add new water to the tank. Some conditioners also bind ammonia temporarily, which provides a safety buffer during water changes or in emergency situations. Keep a bottle on hand at all times — running out of conditioner during an unplanned water change forces you to choose between adding untreated water and leaving the tank volume low, neither of which is ideal.
PH and KH test solutions are worth purchasing separately in addition to a master test kit because you will use them more frequently than the other tests. Monitoring alkalinity weekly helps you catch buffering declines early, before the pH drops to a level that stresses the fish. A sudden pH crash in a Malawi tank is one of the most common causes of mass mortality, and it is entirely preventable with regular testing and timely mineral supplementation.
