Crystal Red Shrimp are omnivorous grazers that spend most of their waking hours picking through biofilm, decaying plant matter, and microscopic algae. Their nutritional demands are modest in volume but highly specific in composition. A diet that supports strong exoskeleton development, vivid red-and-white banding, and reliable molting cycles requires a careful balance of proteins, minerals, and plant-based fiber.
Calcium and other trace minerals sit at the top of the priority list. Every molt is a full-body replacement of the exoskeleton, and without adequate mineral intake the new shell can form soft or malformed, leaving the shrimp vulnerable to injury and bacterial infection. Protein is important for growth and reproduction but should remain moderate — excessive protein can foul water parameters faster than a small colony can process it.
Because Crystal Red Shrimp evolved in soft, acidic streams with limited food availability, they are adapted to a lean diet supplemented by constant grazing. Overfeeding is one of the most common mistakes keepers make, and it degrades water quality far faster than underfeeding ever harms the colony. The goal is variety in small amounts, rotated across the week.
Color intensity in Crystal Red Shrimp is partly genetic but also partly dietary. Carotenoid-rich foods — spirulina, astaxanthin-bearing algae, and certain dried vegetable preparations — can support and enhance the red pigmentation that makes high-grade specimens so striking. A nutrition plan that ignores color-supporting foods may produce healthy but visually underwhelming shrimp.
