Cardinalfish are a schooling species that perform best when kept in groups of five or more, and the aquarium must be sized to accommodate this social dynamic comfortably. A minimum tank volume of 20 gallons is appropriate for a small group of a single cardinalfish species, but 30 gallons or more provides substantially better stability and swimming room. Larger volumes also buffer against the water quality fluctuations that smaller systems are prone to, which is particularly important in saltwater setups where parameter swings can be lethal.
Tank dimensions matter as much as total volume. Cardinalfish are mid-water dwellers that appreciate horizontal swimming space over vertical height. A tank with a longer footprint and moderate depth gives the school room to move in natural formation and reduces the territorial friction that can develop in cramped quarters. Tall, narrow tanks are a poor fit for this species even when the gallon count seems adequate on paper.
When planning for a community reef or fish-only-with-live-rock system, factor in the bioload of all inhabitants rather than sizing the tank for the cardinalfish alone. These fish are modest waste producers individually, but a school of six or eight in a heavily stocked system can tip the balance if the tank was not originally planned for that total bioload.
Placement within your home also affects the tank's suitability as cardinalfish housing. Cardinalfish are light-sensitive and can become stressed in tanks placed in high-traffic areas with frequent shadow movement or vibration. A stable, relatively calm location away from direct window light helps keep the school relaxed and encourages natural behavior.
