Understanding these natural behaviors is the key to providing meaningful enrichment — the goal is to create an environment that encourages the full range of activities a blenny would engage in on a natural reef.

In the wild, blennies spend the majority of their waking hours engaged in three primary activities: grazing on algae and microorganisms, surveying their territory from elevated perching spots, and investigating new objects or changes in their immediate environment. A well-enriched captive habitat should provide opportunities for all three. Tanks that offer only open water and a few rocks leave blennies understimulated and prone to repetitive behaviors like glass surfing, where the fish swims back and forth against the tank walls.

Curiosity is a defining blenny trait. These fish actively investigate anything new in their environment, approaching unfamiliar objects cautiously before inspecting them closely with their characteristically expressive faces. Place algae sheets in different positions on the glass, target-feed frozen food to different areas of rockwork, and occasionally scatter sinking pellets across a wider area to encourage foraging behavior rather than passive waiting.

Feeding clips positioned at various points around the tank create grazing stations that mimic the patchwork distribution of algae on a natural reef. Moving the clip to a new location every few days encourages your blenny to explore the full tank rather than camping at a single predictable feeding point.
