Banjo Catfish are relatively small and sedentary, but they still require adequate floor space to thrive. A single specimen does well in a tank of twenty gallons or more, though the emphasis should be on footprint rather than height. These fish spend virtually all their time on or partially buried in the substrate, making horizontal surface area far more important than water column depth.

For keepers planning to house multiple Banjo Catfish, add roughly ten gallons of capacity per additional fish. While they are not territorial in any aggressive sense, each individual needs enough substrate area to establish a resting zone without being forced into constant proximity with tank mates. Crowded floor space leads to stress behaviors and can suppress feeding.

Long, shallow tank designs are ideal. Standard rectangular aquariums in the twenty-long or thirty-long format provide generous bottom area without the excessive depth of tall or hexagonal designs. Breeder-style tanks, which are wider and shorter than standard models of the same volume, are another excellent option that maximizes the usable living space for bottom dwellers.

Avoid novelty tank shapes such as bowls, columns, or curved-front designs. These formats compromise surface area, create distorted viewing angles that complicate health monitoring, and often lack the structural dimensions needed to install proper filtration and heating equipment. A standard rectangular glass or acrylic aquarium remains the best foundation for a Banjo Catfish habitat.

Substrate Selection

Substrate is arguably the most critical housing decision for Banjo Catfish, because these animals spend their lives in direct contact with it. Fine sand is the universally recommended choice. Banjo Catfish partially bury themselves as a natural camouflage and resting behavior, and sand allows them to do this comfortably without risk of abrasion or injury to their soft underbellies.

Pool filter sand and play sand are both affordable and effective options. Pool filter sand has a more uniform grain size and rinses clean more easily, while play sand is finer and allows for deeper burrowing. Hang-on-back filters and canister filters both work well, provided the outflow is baffled or redirected to reduce current at the substrate level.

Canister filters are the preferred option for tanks of thirty gallons and above. They offer superior biological filtration capacity, operate quietly, and allow the keeper to customize media trays with a combination of mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration stages. Hiding Spots & Decor

Banjo Catfish are masters of concealment, and a well-designed tank provides multiple hiding options that let the fish feel secure during daylight hours. Driftwood pieces with natural crevices, hollows, and overhangs are the most natural and visually appealing hiding structures. Mopani wood and Malaysian driftwood both work well and release tannins that darken the water slightly, mimicking the blackwater conditions many Banjo Catfish originate from.

Smooth river stones and slate pieces can be arranged to create low caves and sheltered pockets at the substrate level. Avoid rough or sharp-edged rocks that could injure the fish as it moves across or wedges beneath them. The goal is to create structures that sit flush or nearly flush with the sand, offering overhead cover without requiring the fish to navigate vertical terrain.

Ceramic and resin caves designed for aquarium use are another effective option, particularly for keepers who prefer a more predictable layout. Choose caves with wide, low openings that accommodate the Banjo Catfish's flat body profile. Tubes and narrow-mouthed caves designed for cichlids or plecos may be too restrictive for the broad, flattened shape of a Banjo Catfish.

Live or artificial plants add visual complexity and additional cover. Broad-leafed plants like Anubias, Java Fern, and Amazon Swords planted around the midground and background give the fish a sense of overhead canopy without crowding the substrate. Floating plants can also reduce ambient light levels, making the tank environment more comfortable for a nocturnal species that avoids bright illumination.

Lighting & Climate Control

Banjo Catfish are light-averse, and the lighting setup should reflect this. Low to moderate intensity LED fixtures are sufficient for most tanks, providing enough illumination for plant growth and viewing without overwhelming a nocturnal species. Fixtures with adjustable brightness or built-in dimming schedules allow keepers to gradually ramp light up and down, simulating a natural dawn and dusk cycle.

A photoperiod of eight to ten hours is appropriate for a Banjo Catfish tank. Longer light cycles encourage algae growth without benefiting the fish, and excessively bright conditions can cause the fish to remain buried and inactive for extended periods, potentially suppressing feeding behavior. If the tank is in a room with significant ambient light, consider a timer to maintain a consistent schedule.

Water temperature should be maintained between seventy-two and seventy-nine degrees Fahrenheit, consistent with the tropical South American habitats these fish originate from. A reliable submersible heater with an adjustable thermostat is essential in any climate where room temperature drops below this range. Choose a heater rated for the tank volume and install it near a filter outflow to distribute heated water evenly.

A heater guard is a worthwhile accessory for any tank housing bottom-dwelling fish. Banjo Catfish rest directly on the substrate and may settle against an unguarded glass heater tube, risking burns. Plastic or stainless steel heater guards create a physical barrier between the heating element and the fish without impeding heat distribution into the water column.

Community Tank Considerations

Banjo Catfish are among the most peaceful aquarium fish available, making them compatible with a wide range of community tank mates. However, their docile nature and sedentary lifestyle mean that housing choices must account for the needs of more active or assertive species sharing the space. The key principle is to ensure the Banjo Catfish is never out-competed for floor space or food access.

Ideal tank mates include small to mid-sized peaceful species that occupy the middle and upper water column. Tetras, rasboras, peaceful gouramis, and Corydoras catfish all coexist well with Banjo Catfish. Avoid large cichlids, aggressive bottom dwellers, and any species known to harass or nip at slow-moving tank mates.

When housing Banjo Catfish in a community tank, ensure that the tank footprint is large enough to provide dedicated bottom territory for each species that uses the substrate. Corydoras, loaches, and other bottom dwellers will share floor space with Banjo Catfish, but competition for the best hiding spots can arise in tanks that lack sufficient structure and cover. Adding extra driftwood, caves, and plant cover helps distribute resting sites across the entire tank floor.

Feeding in a community setting requires extra attention. Active mid-water species often intercept sinking food before it reaches the substrate, leaving bottom dwellers underfed. Target feeding with a pipette or feeding dish placed near the Banjo Catfish's preferred resting area ensures the fish receives its share. Feeding after lights-out, when upper-level species are less active, also improves food access for nocturnal bottom feeders.
