A reliable water testing kit is the single most important accessory for any assassin snail keeper. Liquid reagent test kits that measure ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, general hardness, and carbonate hardness provide the accuracy needed to monitor the parameters that directly affect snail health. Strip tests are convenient but significantly less precise, and their margin of error can mask dangerous trends before they become visibly apparent.
General hardness and carbonate hardness tests are particularly critical for assassin snails because shell integrity depends on adequate mineral content in the water. Many general-purpose test kits do not include hardness testing, so keepers may need to purchase a separate hardness test or a comprehensive kit that covers the full range. Testing hardness at least biweekly helps catch slow declines that would otherwise go unnoticed until shell damage appears.
PH testing should be performed weekly at minimum and always before and after water changes. Assassin snails tolerate a fairly broad pH range of seven to eight, but sudden shifts of more than a few tenths can trigger stress responses including prolonged retraction into the shell and refusal to feed. Keepers who use tap water with variable pH should consider aging and aerating water before adding it to the tank.
A testing log — whether a simple notebook or a spreadsheet — helps keepers track parameter trends over time and correlate changes with snail behavior. A single test reading in isolation tells you where things stand right now, but a series of readings over weeks and months reveals whether conditions are stable, improving, or gradually deteriorating in ways that individual snapshots miss.
