These fish require a stable water temperature between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, and even minor fluctuations outside this range can trigger stress, suppress the immune system, and dull coloration. Submersible heaters with built-in thermostats are the standard choice, offering consistent performance and straightforward installation inside the tank.

Heater sizing follows the general rule of 3 to 5 watts per gallon of tank volume. For a 75-gallon Peacock Cichlid tank, a 250- to 375-watt heater provides adequate heating capacity under normal household conditions. In colder climates or rooms with significant temperature swings, using two smaller heaters positioned at opposite ends of the tank distributes heat more evenly and provides a safety net—if one unit fails, the other prevents a catastrophic temperature drop.

A separate digital thermometer is essential even when the heater has a built-in temperature display. Heater thermostats can drift over time, and relying solely on the heater's readout creates a false sense of security. Water Treatment & Testing

Water conditioners that neutralize chlorine and chloramine are required every time fresh tap water is added to the tank. Municipal water treatment processes use these chemicals at concentrations that are safe for humans but immediately toxic to fish, damaging gill tissue and killing beneficial bacteria on contact. A quality dechlorinator should be dosed into replacement water before it enters the tank—never after.

Cichlid-specific water conditioners and mineral supplements are available for keepers whose tap water does not naturally match the alkaline, mineral-rich profile Peacock Cichlids require. These products add calcium, magnesium, and carbonate buffers to bring soft or neutral water in line with Lake Malawi parameters. While not every keeper needs these products, those with soft, acidic source water will find them indispensable for maintaining stable chemistry.

A comprehensive liquid test kit is the diagnostic backbone of responsible fishkeeping. At minimum, the kit should test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and KH. Liquid reagent tests are significantly more accurate than paper test strips and provide the precision needed to detect the early stages of a water quality problem. Testing weekly under normal conditions and daily during cycling, after medicating, or following a fish loss ensures timely intervention.

Keeping a logbook or digital record of test results creates a historical baseline that makes it easier to spot trends and anomalies. A single pH reading of 8.0 means little in isolation, but a log showing a steady decline from 8.4 to 8.0 over three weeks reveals a buffering problem that needs attention. This habit takes less than a minute per test session and pays dividends in long-term tank management.

Nets & Transfer Equipment

A high-quality fish net is an essential tool that sees regular use in any active cichlid tank. Catching fish for quarantine, treatment, or rehoming requires a net that is appropriately sized for the species—a net with an opening roughly twice the width of the largest fish in the tank provides the best balance of maneuverability and effectiveness. Soft, fine-mesh nets reduce the risk of fin damage and scale loss during capture.

Using two nets simultaneously is the most efficient and least stressful capture technique for Peacock Cichlids. One net herds the target fish toward the second, stationary net, minimizing the frantic chasing that stresses both the target and every other fish in the tank. This two-net method is especially important in heavily aquascaped tanks where a single net can become snagged on rock formations and decorations.

Breeder boxes and isolation containers serve as temporary holding spaces for injured fish, new arrivals undergoing acclimation, or females carrying fry. Clear acrylic or mesh breeder boxes that hang inside the main tank allow the isolated fish to remain in the same water conditions while being physically separated from tank mates. These are far less stressful than moving a fish to an entirely separate system, as the water chemistry and temperature remain constant.

Acclimation equipment—drip-line kits, specimen containers, and floating bags—is critical for introducing new fish to the tank safely. The drip acclimation method, which slowly mixes tank water into the transport bag over 30 to 60 minutes, allows the fish to gradually adjust to differences in pH, temperature, and hardness. Rushing this process by simply dumping a new fish into the tank risks osmotic shock, which can be fatal even when the water parameters appear similar on paper.

Backup & Emergency Gear

Power outages represent the most immediate emergency risk for a Peacock Cichlid tank. Without electricity, heaters shut off, filters stop circulating, and oxygen levels begin to drop within hours. A battery-powered air pump is the single most important piece of emergency equipment to have on hand. These compact, affordable devices can sustain basic aeration for 12 to 48 hours on a set of batteries, buying critical time until power is restored.

Uninterruptible power supply units designed for aquarium use provide a more comprehensive backup solution. These systems can power a heater and a small filter for several hours, maintaining both temperature and water circulation during an outage. While more expensive than a battery air pump, a UPS is worth the investment for keepers in areas prone to frequent or extended power interruptions, especially during winter months when temperature drops are the most dangerous.

A quarantine tank—even a simple, bare 10- to 20-gallon setup with a sponge filter and heater—is an accessory that every serious cichlid keeper should maintain. New fish should be quarantined for two to four weeks before introduction to the main tank, and sick fish need to be isolated for treatment to prevent disease from spreading. Medicating a quarantine tank is also far more economical and precise than dosing the entire display aquarium.

Keeping a basic fish first-aid kit stocked with essential medications and treatments prepares the keeper to respond quickly to common health issues. Anti-parasitic treatments, antibacterial solutions, aquarium salt, and a general-purpose anti-fungal cover the most frequently encountered problems in a cichlid tank. Having these products on the shelf rather than scrambling to purchase them after symptoms appear can mean the difference between a minor health event and a significant loss.
