Broad Breasted White turkeys are among the fastest-growing domestic poultry breeds, and their nutritional demands reflect that rapid development. From poult to market weight, these birds require carefully balanced protein, energy, and mineral intake to support healthy bone growth, feather development, and muscle mass. Deficiencies at any stage can lead to leg problems, poor feathering, or depressed immune function, all of which are more pronounced in heavy-bodied breeds.
Protein is the cornerstone of a Broad Breasted White's diet, particularly during the first eight weeks of life when poults need feed containing 28 to 30 percent crude protein. As the birds mature, protein requirements taper to roughly 20 to 22 percent for growers and 16 to 18 percent for finishers. Amino acid balance matters just as much as total protein content, with methionine and lysine being the two most critical limiting amino acids in turkey rations.
Calcium and phosphorus must be supplied in the correct ratio — generally around 2:1 — to support the skeletal system that carries substantial body weight. Vitamins A, D, and E also play outsized roles in turkey nutrition, supporting vision, calcium metabolism, and antioxidant protection respectively. Niacin is another nutrient that deserves special attention, as turkeys are unusually susceptible to niacin deficiency, which can cause bowed legs and joint swelling in growing poults.
Water is often overlooked in nutritional planning, but Broad Breasted Whites consume large volumes daily, especially in warm weather. Clean, fresh water must be available at all times, and waterers should be sized and positioned to accommodate the birds' broad chests. Dehydration reduces feed intake rapidly, stalling growth and stressing the cardiovascular system in a breed already prone to heart-related issues.
