Merino sheep have distinct nutritional demands driven largely by their extraordinary wool output. A single Merino can produce upward of twenty pounds of dense, fine fleece per year, and that growth places heavy demands on protein, sulfur-containing amino acids, and energy reserves. Without adequate nutrition, fleece quality deteriorates rapidly, fibers become brittle or tender, and the animal's body condition suffers long before external signs become obvious.
Protein is the cornerstone of Merino nutrition. Wool is roughly ninety-seven percent keratin, and the sulfur-bearing amino acids methionine and cysteine are critical building blocks. Diets that fall short on crude protein — generally below twelve to fourteen percent for actively growing wool — lead to reduced staple strength and increased fiber breaks. Ewes in late gestation or early lactation need even higher protein levels to support both lamb growth and fleece production simultaneously.
Energy requirements fluctuate with season, reproductive status, and environmental stress. Maintenance needs rise sharply in cold or wet weather, and Merinos that are shorn mid-winter require substantially more feed energy to regulate body temperature while the fleece regrows. Monitoring body condition scoring on a regular schedule helps prevent overfeeding, which can cause metabolic issues, or underfeeding, which compromises wool and reproductive performance.
Minerals and trace elements round out the nutritional picture. Merinos are particularly sensitive to copper — they tolerate far less dietary copper than cattle or goats, and excess intake leads to toxicity that can be fatal. At the same time, they require adequate selenium, zinc, and cobalt. Regional soil deficiencies often dictate which supplements are necessary, so working with a local livestock nutritionist or extension agent is essential for getting the mineral balance right.
