Hampshire sheep are a large-framed, fast-growing breed originally developed for meat production in southern England. Their size and muscular build mean they have higher caloric and protein requirements than many other sheep breeds, particularly during the growth phase of lambs and during late gestation and lactation in ewes. Understanding these baseline needs is the foundation of any sound feeding program.
The core of a Hampshire's diet should be high-quality forage. Pasture grasses and legumes supply the bulk of their energy and fiber needs during the grazing season, while well-cured hay serves as the primary feed during winter months or in dryland environments. Legume hays tend to be higher in protein and calcium, making them especially useful for lactating ewes and growing lambs, while grass hays are suitable for maintenance periods when nutritional demands are lower.
Protein is a critical nutrient for Hampshires at every life stage, but the required percentage shifts depending on the animal's role in the flock. Growing lambs and ewes nursing twins or triplets need substantially more protein than dry ewes or rams outside of breeding season. Mineral supplementation is equally important — sheep require a carefully balanced ratio of calcium and phosphorus, and they are uniquely sensitive to copper, which can be toxic at levels that are safe for other livestock.
Water is frequently overlooked when discussing nutrition, but it is arguably the single most important nutrient. A mature Hampshire ewe may drink two or more gallons per day in warm weather, and lactating ewes require significantly more. Clean, fresh water must be available at all times, and intake should be monitored as a sudden drop can signal health issues before other symptoms appear.
