These should be cut into manageable sizes to prevent choking — llamas chew with a lateral grinding motion, and large chunks of hard produce can lodge in the esophagus.

Commercial livestock treats and cookies are available, but many are formulated for horses or goats and may contain molasses levels or ingredient profiles that aren't ideal for camelids. The social dynamics of treat-giving matter as much as the treats themselves. Foods to Avoid

Several common plants and food items are toxic or harmful to llamas and should be rigorously excluded from their environment. Nightshade family plants — including tomato and potato foliage, eggplant leaves, and wild nightshade — contain solanine and related alkaloids that can cause neurological symptoms, gastrointestinal distress, and in severe cases, death. Rhododendron, azalea, and oleander are equally dangerous and are sometimes found in ornamental landscaping near pastures.

Avocado is toxic to most camelids, affecting the heart and mammary tissue, and should never be offered as a treat or disposed of where llamas can access discarded fruit or prunings. Cherry, peach, and plum leaves — particularly when wilted — release cyanogenic compounds that can cause rapid respiratory failure. If these trees grow near your pasture, fencing them off completely is essential.

Grain overload is one of the most common and preventable emergencies in llama management.
