Toulouse Geese are among the largest domestic waterfowl breeds, and their housing needs reflect that considerable size. Each adult bird should have a minimum of six to eight square feet of indoor shelter space, with significantly more being preferable. Overcrowding leads to stress, aggression, soiled bedding, and increased disease transmission — all of which are amplified in a breed this heavy, since Toulouse Geese cannot easily escape confrontation by flying or jumping to elevated perches the way lighter poultry can.

Outdoor run or pasture space is equally important. Plan for at least 40 square feet of fenced outdoor area per bird, though more is always better. Toulouse Geese are ground-dwelling grazers who spend the majority of their waking hours outside, and restricting their movement leads to leg problems, obesity, and behavioral issues. A well-designed setup gives birds room to forage, bathe, and move freely between shelter and open ground throughout the day.

Door and entry sizing is a detail that many first-time goose keepers overlook. Standard chicken pop doors are far too small for a Toulouse Goose. Shelter openings should be at least 18 inches wide and 24 inches tall to allow birds to pass through comfortably without stooping or squeezing. Ramps should be gently sloped — no steeper than 20 degrees — since this heavy breed is prone to leg and foot injuries on steep inclines.

Consider the long-term footprint of your flock when planning housing. Geese are long-lived birds, often reaching 20 years or more, and Toulouse Geese tend to bond strongly with flockmates. Building housing that accommodates your anticipated flock size for the next decade avoids the expense and disruption of repeated expansions. Modular shelter designs that allow sections to be added are a practical compromise between building for today and planning for tomorrow.

Shelters & Night Housing

The primary purpose of a Toulouse Goose shelter is protection from predators and extreme weather. Unlike chickens, geese do not roost on perches — they sleep on the ground. This means shelter design should prioritize floor space, ventilation, and predator-proof construction rather than vertical roosting structures. A simple three-sided shelter with a closable front works well in mild climates, while fully enclosed structures with latching doors are necessary in areas with significant predator pressure.

Flooring choices have a major impact on bird health and keeper workload. Dirt floors with deep bedding are the most common and least expensive option. Straw or wood shavings layered six to eight inches deep provide insulation, cushioning for heavy birds, and moisture absorption. Concrete floors are easier to sanitize and prevent predators from digging in, but they require thicker bedding layers to protect the birds' feet and keel bones from pressure sores. Avoid wire or slatted flooring entirely — the weight of a Toulouse Goose on wire mesh causes painful foot injuries.

Ventilation is critical and often underestimated. Geese produce substantial moisture through respiration and droppings, and a poorly ventilated shelter quickly becomes damp and ammonia-laden. Ridge vents, gable vents, or adjustable wall vents positioned above bird height allow moist air to escape without creating drafts at floor level. The goal is continuous air exchange that keeps the interior dry without exposing birds to cold wind currents during winter.

Nesting areas within the shelter should be low-walled enclosures at floor level, roughly 24 by 24 inches, lined with clean straw. Toulouse hens prefer a sense of privacy when laying, so positioning nesting spots along walls or in corners encourages use. Provide one nesting area for every two to three hens in the flock. During breeding season, check nesting areas daily and refresh bedding to maintain hygiene and encourage consistent laying behavior.

Fencing & Predator Protection

Fencing for Toulouse Geese serves two purposes: keeping birds contained and keeping predators out. Because Toulouse Geese are essentially flightless due to their weight, perimeter fencing does not need to be especially tall — three to four feet is generally sufficient to contain the birds. However, predator defense demands more robust construction. Welded wire fencing with openings no larger than two by four inches prevents most ground predators from reaching through or squeezing in.

Burying a wire apron 12 to 18 inches outward from the fence base deters digging predators like foxes, coyotes, and raccoons. An alternative is bending the bottom 12 inches of fencing outward along the ground and securing it with landscape staples — predators instinctively dig at the fence base and are blocked by the horizontal wire. For areas with heavy predator pressure, adding a hot wire at nose height along the outside of the perimeter provides an additional deterrent.

Aerial predators are a concern even for large geese. Hawks, eagles, and owls will target goslings and can injure adults. Overhead netting or wire mesh across the run eliminates this risk entirely. Where full overhead coverage is impractical, providing covered areas — such as lean-to shelters, brush piles, or shade structures — gives geese a place to retreat when aerial threats appear. Toulouse Geese are less vigilant than lighter, more agile breeds, making physical barriers more important than relying on the birds' own awareness.

Gate and door security deserves attention equal to the fence itself. Raccoons are notorious for manipulating simple latches, so use two-step locking mechanisms or carabiner clips on all access points. Inspect fencing regularly for rust, damage from fallen branches, or holes created by burrowing animals. A single weak point in an otherwise solid enclosure is all a determined predator needs, and the loss of even one bird from a bonded Toulouse flock can disrupt the social dynamics of the entire group.

Water Access & Bathing Areas

Water is central to the well-being of any waterfowl species, and Toulouse Geese are no exception. At minimum, geese need water deep enough to submerge their entire head and bill, which allows them to clean their eyes and nostrils — a basic hygiene behavior that prevents infections. A deep bucket or trough that permits full head dunking satisfies this baseline requirement, but providing a bathing area where birds can at least partially immerse their bodies significantly improves feather condition and overall contentment.

Small prefabricated ponds, stock tanks, or kiddie pools are popular bathing solutions for backyard and small-farm flocks. Whatever container you choose, it must be sturdy enough to support the weight of a 25-pound goose climbing in and out. Ensure edges are low enough or ramped so that birds can enter and exit safely — Toulouse Geese are not agile climbers, and a slippery-sided container can trap a bird or cause leg injuries. Textured ramps or cinder block steps placed beside the water source provide safe access.

Drainage and water quality management are the practical realities of providing bathing access. Geese foul water rapidly with droppings and mud, and stagnant dirty water breeds bacteria and parasites. Position water features in areas with good natural drainage or install a drain plug for easy emptying and refilling. Dump and refill small pools daily during warm weather. For larger setups, a simple gravity-fed overflow system or recirculating pump with a filter reduces maintenance while keeping water cleaner between full changes.

In cold climates, water management becomes more challenging during winter. Heated base units designed for livestock water troughs prevent freezing and ensure birds maintain access to drinking and bill-cleaning water. Full bathing access may not be practical during extended freezes, and that is acceptable for short periods as long as geese can still submerge their heads. Avoid using de-icing chemicals in any water that geese access — stick to thermostatically controlled heaters designed for animal use.

Climate Considerations

Toulouse Geese are hardy birds with dense plumage and substantial body mass, making them naturally well-suited to cold climates. They tolerate freezing temperatures far better than heat, and in most temperate regions a well-ventilated, draft-free shelter is sufficient winter protection without supplemental heating. Adding heat sources to a goose shelter actually introduces fire risk and can create dangerous temperature fluctuations when birds move between a heated interior and frigid outdoor conditions.

Heat stress is the more pressing climate concern for this breed. Toulouse Geese carry significant weight and have limited ability to cool themselves. Temperatures above 80°F can cause panting, lethargy, and in severe cases heat stroke. Shade is essential in any warm-weather setup — either natural shade from trees or constructed shade structures over portions of the run. Ensuring constant access to clean, cool water for drinking and bathing is the single most effective heat mitigation strategy.

Bedding management shifts with the seasons. During winter, deep litter methods work well — allow bedding to build up in layers, with fresh straw added on top regularly. The decomposing lower layers generate gentle warmth that helps insulate the shelter floor. In summer, switch to thinner bedding layers that are changed more frequently to prevent moisture buildup, ammonia accumulation, and fly breeding. Wet bedding in warm weather creates ideal conditions for bumblefoot infections, which heavy breeds like Toulouse are already predisposed to developing.

Windbreaks and shelter orientation also play roles in climate management. Position the open side of three-sided shelters away from prevailing winds. In regions with intense summer sun, orient shelters so that the shaded interior remains cool during the hottest part of the day. Strategic placement of shelters on slightly elevated ground prevents water pooling inside during rain and snowmelt, keeping the floor drier and reducing the constant bedding battles that come with poorly sited structures.

Multi-Bird & Mixed-Flock Housing

Toulouse Geese are generally calm and tolerant, making them one of the easier goose breeds to integrate into multi-bird or mixed-species housing arrangements. However, their size can inadvertently cause problems with smaller poultry. A Toulouse Goose stepping on a bantam chicken or crowding a duck away from feed is not aggression — it is simply a very large bird being unaware of its impact. Providing separate sleeping areas and feeding stations for different species within a shared enclosure minimizes these issues.

When housing Toulouse Geese alongside other waterfowl, the primary consideration is shared water access. Geese and ducks both need bathing water, but geese foul it faster and can dominate water features through sheer size. Multiple water stations of different sizes — or a large enough shared pool — prevent competition and ensure all birds can bathe and drink comfortably. Observe interactions during the first few weeks of cohabitation to identify any persistent bullying patterns that need intervention.

Gander behavior during breeding season is the most common source of housing conflict. Even normally placid Toulouse ganders can become territorial and aggressive toward other birds and humans when protecting a nesting hen. Plan for the ability to temporarily separate breeding pairs or trios into their own enclosure during the spring nesting period. This protects other flock members, reduces stress on laying hens, and often improves fertility by eliminating competition.

For keepers managing a mixed flock of geese, ducks, and chickens, tiered shelter design works well. Chickens prefer to roost above ground level, ducks settle on floor-level platforms, and geese sleep on bedded ground areas. A single structure with a raised roosting bar section, a slightly elevated platform, and a generous floor-level zone accommodates all three species without requiring separate buildings. Just ensure that droppings from roosting chickens do not fall onto the waterfowl sleeping areas below.
