Space Requirements

Embden Geese are large, active birds that need considerably more space than chickens or ducks. As a general rule, each adult Embden requires a minimum of six to eight square feet of indoor shelter space and significantly more outdoor roaming area — at least 20 square feet per bird in a run, though more is always better. Overcrowding leads to stress, aggression, dirty conditions, and increased susceptibility to respiratory illness, all of which compound quickly in a flock of heavy-bodied waterfowl.

Outdoor space is where Embdens truly thrive. These are grazing birds that prefer to spend the majority of their day on open pasture, and confining them to a small pen undermines both their physical health and their temperament. A quarter acre of rotating pasture for a small flock of four to six birds is a comfortable target that allows for grass recovery and reduces parasite load. If free-ranging is not feasible, a generously sized yard with mixed ground cover gives the birds room to forage, exercise, and engage in natural behaviors.

The shelter itself does not need to be elaborate, but it does need to be appropriately scaled. Door openings should be wide enough — at least 18 to 24 inches — for these broad-bodied birds to pass through without hesitation. Geese will refuse to use a shelter if the entrance feels cramped or if they have to duck uncomfortably to enter. Ground-level entry is essential, as geese cannot navigate ramps with steep angles the way chickens can.

Consider the flock's social dynamics when planning space. Embdens are social and typically get along well, but breeding season can bring territorial behavior, especially from ganders. Having enough room for subordinate birds to move away from dominant ones prevents injuries and stress. Dead-end corners inside shelters are particularly problematic — a bird that gets cornered has no escape route and can be seriously hurt.

Shelters & Night Housing

The primary purpose of a goose shelter is nighttime protection from predators. Unlike chickens, geese do not roost on elevated perches — they sleep on the ground, which makes them vulnerable to anything that can dig under or push through a flimsy structure. A well-built shelter with a solid floor or hardware cloth apron extending outward from the base is essential. The walls should be sturdy enough to resist raccoons, foxes, and dogs, all of which are common predators of domestic waterfowl.

Ventilation is the most commonly overlooked aspect of goose housing. Waterfowl produce significantly more moisture than chickens through their droppings and respiration, and a poorly ventilated shelter will quickly develop dangerous ammonia levels and encourage respiratory infections. Ventilation openings should be positioned high — near the roofline — to allow moist air to escape without creating drafts at ground level where the birds sleep. Hardware cloth over all openings keeps predators out while maintaining airflow.

Flooring choices have a direct impact on flock health and maintenance workload. Dirt or earthen floors work if the shelter is on well-drained ground and bedding is managed diligently. Concrete floors are easier to clean and fully predator-proof but are cold in winter and hard on the birds' feet and keel bones without a generous layer of bedding. Raised wooden floors offer a good compromise — they stay drier and warmer than dirt while remaining easier to maintain than bare concrete.

Bedding depth should be substantial. Straw is the most popular choice for goose shelters because it provides cushioning, insulation, and is easy to replace. Pine shavings work as well, though they compact more quickly and need more frequent refreshing. Avoid cedar shavings, which contain aromatic oils that can irritate waterfowl respiratory systems. The deep litter method — adding fresh bedding on top of existing layers and doing a full cleanout periodically — is a practical approach that many goose keepers find manageable.

Outdoor Runs & Fencing

Fencing for Embden Geese serves two purposes: keeping the birds where you want them and keeping predators out. A four-foot fence is generally sufficient to contain adult Embdens, as these heavy birds are functionally flightless and rarely attempt to go over barriers. However, the fence must also account for digging predators. Burying hardware cloth or welded wire at least 12 inches below ground level, or bending it outward in an L-shaped apron along the base, discourages foxes, coyotes, and dogs from tunneling underneath.

Welded wire fencing with openings no larger than two inches by four inches is a reliable choice for the main enclosure. Chicken wire is inadequate for predator protection — raccoons can tear through it, and dogs can push through it with minimal effort. If budget is a concern, chicken wire can be used as a secondary barrier inside a more robust outer fence, but it should never be the sole line of defense for a goose enclosure.

Gate design matters more than many keepers expect. Gates need to be wide enough for the birds to pass through comfortably and for you to move in and out with wheelbarrows, feed buckets, or bedding bales. A gate that is too narrow creates a bottleneck that stresses the birds and slows daily chores. Self-closing mechanisms or reliable latches are important, as raccoons are remarkably adept at opening simple hook-and-eye closures.

Electric fencing — either permanent or portable netting — is an effective supplement for free-range setups where the primary goal is predator deterrence rather than strict containment. Portable electric netting can be repositioned to give the flock access to fresh grazing areas while maintaining a deterrent perimeter. Solar-powered chargers make this practical even in remote areas without electrical access. Introduce geese to electric fencing gradually so they learn to respect the boundary without panicking.

Water Access & Bathing Areas

Water is central to goose welfare in ways that go beyond drinking. Embden Geese need water deep enough to submerge their heads and bills for cleaning their nostrils and eyes, and they are noticeably happier and healthier when they have access to water they can splash in or swim in. While a full pond is not strictly necessary, providing some form of bathing water dramatically improves feather condition, helps with thermoregulation, and supports natural preening behavior that keeps plumage waterproof.

For keepers without a natural pond, a heavy-duty stock tank, kiddie pool, or purpose-built waterfowl pool provides an adequate bathing area. The key considerations are durability, drainage, and ease of cleaning. Geese foul water quickly, and a bathing container that cannot be dumped and refilled easily becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and parasites. Positioning the pool on gravel or in a well-drained area prevents the surrounding ground from becoming a permanent mud pit.

Drainage planning around water features is one of the most underestimated aspects of goose housing. Wherever geese have water access, the surrounding area will get wet — there is no avoiding it. French drains, gravel pads, and strategic grading that moves water away from shelters and high-traffic areas keep the enclosure manageable. Failure to address drainage leads to standing water, mud accumulation, and conditions that promote bumblefoot and other infections.

Drinking water should be provided separately from bathing water when possible. Nipple drinkers or covered waterers keep drinking water cleaner for longer and reduce the frequency of refills. In cold climates, heated waterers or de-icing elements are essential during winter months, as geese cannot eat properly without access to liquid water and dehydration during freezing weather is a serious and preventable risk.

Climate Considerations

Embden Geese are remarkably cold-hardy birds, and their dense plumage and substantial body mass make them well-suited to harsh winters. In most temperate and cold climates, a dry, draft-free shelter with adequate bedding is all that is needed to keep the birds comfortable through freezing temperatures. Supplemental heat is almost never required and can actually be dangerous — heat lamps in a straw-bedded shelter are a significant fire risk, and geese that become dependent on artificial warmth struggle to acclimate when power fails or temperatures fluctuate.

The real winter challenge for Embden Geese is not cold but moisture and frostbite on exposed skin. Their feet, legs, and bills are the vulnerable areas. Keeping bedding deep and dry inside the shelter gives the birds a warm surface to rest on and protects their feet. Ensuring water stations are positioned to minimize splashing near sleeping areas helps keep the interior dry. In extreme cold, petroleum-based protectants can be applied to bills and feet as an additional precaution, though well-managed housing usually makes this unnecessary.

Heat is actually a greater concern than cold for these heavy, densely feathered birds. In hot climates or during summer heat waves, Embdens can experience heat stress quickly. Shade is non-negotiable — the outdoor run must include shaded areas where the birds can escape direct sun during peak hours. Trees, shade cloth, or covered structures all work. Access to cool, clean water for drinking and bathing becomes even more critical in warm weather, as the birds use water immersion as their primary cooling mechanism.

Watch for signs of heat stress, which include open-mouth breathing, wing spreading, lethargy, and reduced appetite. On extremely hot days, providing frozen treats in water, misting systems, or fans in the shelter can help bring body temperatures down. Never confine geese inside a poorly ventilated structure during high heat — the combination of trapped moisture and elevated temperatures can create conditions that are genuinely life-threatening.

Multi-Bird & Mixed-Flock Setups

Embden Geese are social animals that do best in groups of at least two or three. A single goose kept alone will often become anxious, vocal, and overly dependent on human interaction, which can lead to behavioral problems including aggression. When planning housing, account for the full flock size from the start rather than retrofitting as you add birds — expanding housing after the fact is almost always more expensive and less functional than building to capacity initially.

Mixed-species flocks are common on small farms, and Embden Geese can coexist with ducks, chickens, and other poultry if the housing arrangement accounts for each species' needs. The most important consideration is that geese produce far more moisture than chickens and need more ventilation. Housing them together in a single structure designed for chickens typically creates conditions that are too damp for the chickens and too stuffy for the geese. Separate but adjacent shelters with shared outdoor space is usually the most successful arrangement.

During breeding season, ganders can become territorial and protective of their mates. This is especially relevant in mixed-flock setups, where an assertive gander may chase or injure smaller birds like bantam chickens or call ducks. Having enough space for other birds to stay clear of nesting areas, and being prepared to temporarily separate aggressive individuals, prevents injuries and keeps the flock peaceful. Visual barriers — such as hay bales or partial walls — within a shared run can reduce confrontations by breaking sightlines.

If you keep both geese and ducks, water management becomes the central housing challenge. Both species need bathing water, but they use it differently and in different volumes. Ducks tend to be messier with water inside shelters, while geese do most of their water play outdoors. Designing the enclosure so that water access is primarily outdoors and the shelter stays as dry as possible benefits both species and reduces your maintenance workload significantly.
