Space Requirements

Nubian goats are among the larger dairy breeds and need housing that accommodates their size, social nature, and activity level. As a general guideline, each adult Nubian should have a minimum of fifteen to twenty square feet of indoor shelter space, with more being preferable in climates where goats spend extended periods indoors during winter or severe weather. Overcrowding leads to stress, increased parasite loads, respiratory illness from ammonia buildup, and social conflict that can injure subordinate animals.

Outdoor space is equally important. Nubians are active browsers that need room to move, explore, and establish social hierarchies without constant conflict. A minimum of two hundred square feet of outdoor space per goat is a reasonable starting point, but more is always better. The outdoor area should include varied terrain if possible — goats naturally seek elevated ground, and providing hills, mounds, or raised platforms satisfies this instinct while promoting exercise and hoof health.

Kidding areas require separate planning. A doe approaching her due date should have access to a private kidding stall that measures at least five by five feet, with clean bedding, draft protection, and easy access for the keeper to assist if needed. This stall should be within earshot of the main herd so the doe does not become overly stressed from isolation, but physically separated enough to prevent interference from other goats during and immediately after birth.

Buck housing is another consideration that many first-time goat keepers underestimate. Mature Nubian bucks are powerful, determined, and persistent about escaping to reach does in heat. Buck pens need to be exceptionally sturdy, with fencing rated for large livestock, and should be positioned far enough from the doe pen to prevent unplanned breedings while still allowing visual and social contact that keeps the buck mentally stable.

Shelters & Barn Structures

The shelter itself does not need to be elaborate, but it must provide reliable protection from rain, wind, and direct sun. Nubian goats are originally from warm climates and tend to be less cold-tolerant than some other breeds, so draft-free housing is especially important in northern regions. A three-sided shelter with a south-facing opening works well in mild climates, while fully enclosed barns with ventilation are necessary where winters bring sustained cold, ice, or heavy snow.

Ventilation is one of the most critical and most frequently misunderstood aspects of goat housing. A sealed, airtight barn may seem warmer, but without adequate air exchange, ammonia from urine-soaked bedding accumulates rapidly and causes chronic respiratory damage. Proper ventilation means airflow at or above the roofline — ridge vents, eave gaps, or high windows — that allows stale air to escape without creating drafts at animal level. The goal is fresh air without cold wind blowing directly on the goats.

Flooring choices affect both animal comfort and long-term maintenance. Dirt floors are inexpensive and drain well but can become muddy and develop uneven surfaces. Concrete is easy to sanitize but is hard on joints and hooves and requires thick bedding to prevent discomfort. Raised wooden platforms or rubber stall mats over packed gravel offer a compromise — good drainage, reasonable comfort, and manageable cleaning. Whatever the base floor material, deep bedding with straw or wood shavings should be maintained to absorb moisture and provide insulation.

Door and entry design should account for goat behavior. Goats crowd doorways, push through narrow openings, and the dominant animals will block subordinates from entering or exiting. Wide doorways — at least four feet — or multiple entry points prevent bottlenecks. Dutch doors are useful for ventilation control, allowing the top half to remain open for airflow while the bottom half keeps goats contained. Hardware and latches need to be goat-proof, as Nubians are notoriously clever about opening gates and doors.

Fencing & Containment

Fencing is arguably the most important infrastructure investment in any goat operation, and Nubian goats test fencing constantly. The most reliable option for perimeter fencing is woven wire field fence with a minimum height of four feet, topped with a strand or two of electric wire to discourage leaning, climbing, and jumping. Standard cattle panel works well for smaller paddocks and is extremely durable, though the cost per linear foot is higher than woven wire.

Electric fencing can serve as both a primary and supplementary containment system. A well-designed electric net or multi-strand electric fence with a charger rated for at least one joule of output will deter most goats after a few learning experiences. However, electric-only fencing has limitations — power outages, vegetation shorting out the line, and goats that learn to push through quickly before the pulse hits can all compromise its effectiveness. Many experienced keepers use electric wire as an offset along the inside of a physical fence rather than relying on it alone.

Gate selection deserves careful thought. Gates should be as tall and as sturdy as the fence line, and the latch mechanism must be something goats cannot operate. Nubians in particular are skilled with their lips and tongues and can open many standard gate latches. Snap hooks, carabiners, or purpose-built goat-proof latches are essential. Gates should swing inward if possible, since goats pressing against a gate that opens outward will push it open the moment the latch is released.

Internal fencing to divide pastures for rotational grazing can be lighter-duty than perimeter fencing, since the consequence of a breach is less severe. Portable electric netting is popular for rotational systems because it can be moved quickly and set up without permanent post installation. When planning any fencing layout, consider how you will move goats between paddocks, catch individual animals for health care, and separate groups when needed — a well-designed laneway system connecting paddocks to the barn saves enormous amounts of time and frustration.

Bedding & Flooring Products

Bedding serves multiple functions in a goat shelter — it provides insulation from cold flooring, absorbs urine and moisture, cushions joints, and contributes to overall hygiene when managed properly. The two most common bedding materials for goats are straw and wood shavings, each with distinct advantages. Straw is inexpensive, widely available, and creates a warm, insulating mat when layered. Pine shavings absorb moisture more efficiently per unit volume and are easier to spot-clean.

The deep litter method is a popular bedding management strategy for goat shelters. Instead of stripping the shelter to bare floor daily, keepers add fresh bedding on top of the existing layer, allowing the lower layers to begin composting in place. This composting generates gentle heat during cold months and reduces labor. The system works well when the shelter has adequate ventilation and when fresh bedding is added frequently enough to keep the top surface clean and dry. The entire pack is stripped out and replaced once or twice a year, or more frequently in warm weather when composting can generate excessive heat and ammonia.

Rubber stall mats placed over concrete or packed gravel floors provide a durable, comfortable base layer underneath bedding. These mats cushion the goats' joints, prevent concrete from wicking cold into the bedding, and make deep cleaning much easier when the shelter is fully stripped. Mats designed for horse stalls are typically heavy enough that goats cannot displace them, though lighter-weight mats may shift and bunch.

Avoiding certain bedding materials is as important as choosing the right ones. Cedar shavings contain aromatic oils that can irritate goat respiratory systems and should be avoided. Sawdust is too fine — it compacts densely, does not drain well, and creates respiratory hazards when dry and dusty. Black walnut shavings are toxic and must never be used. Hay should not be used as primary bedding because goats will eat soiled hay, increasing their parasite exposure.

Climate Considerations

Nubian goats trace their ancestry to hot, arid regions of northeastern Africa and the Middle East, which gives them better heat tolerance than many European dairy breeds but also makes them more susceptible to cold stress. In northern climates, winter housing needs to prioritize draft elimination and dry bedding over supplemental heat. Goats grow a winter coat that provides reasonable insulation, but wet conditions combined with cold and wind can overwhelm their thermoregulation quickly. A dry goat in a draft-free shelter with deep bedding will handle surprisingly cold temperatures without distress.

Heat management is important in southern and midwestern climates where summer temperatures regularly exceed ninety degrees. Shade is the first line of defense — shelters, trees, or shade structures should cover enough area that every goat in the herd can access shade simultaneously without crowding. Fans or natural cross-ventilation in barns help move air and reduce heat buildup. Access to cool, fresh water at all times is non-negotiable during heat events, and some keepers provide shallow wading pools or misting systems to help goats cool down during extreme heat.

Rain protection matters more for Nubians than many keepers initially expect. Their large, pendulous ears and relatively sparse coat compared to fiber breeds mean that heavy rain soaks them quickly, and wet Nubians in cool weather are prime candidates for respiratory illness. Covered outdoor areas, run-in shelters, and well-drained paddocks all contribute to keeping goats dry during wet seasons. Mud management around high-traffic areas like barn entrances, feeders, and water troughs prevents chronic hoof problems and reduces parasite transmission.

Regional parasite pressure should influence housing and enclosure design. In warm, humid climates where internal parasites thrive year-round, rotational grazing systems, elevated feeders, and well-drained housing are essential management tools. In arid climates, parasites are less of a concern, but dust and respiratory issues take their place, requiring good ventilation and attention to dry lot management.

Multi-Animal Setups

Nubian goats are herd animals and should always be kept with at least one companion, but managing a group of goats under one roof requires thoughtful design. Social hierarchies are established and maintained through physical confrontation, and housing that forces low-ranking goats into close quarters with dominant animals leads to chronic stress, reduced feed intake, and injuries. Providing multiple feeding stations, water points, and shelter entrances allows subordinate animals to access resources without running a gauntlet of dominant herd members.

Mixed-species housing is common on small farms, and Nubians can coexist with many other livestock species with appropriate planning. Goats and sheep can share pasture and sometimes shelter, but their mineral requirements differ enough that separate mineral feeders are essential — the copper in goat minerals can be toxic to sheep. Goats housed with horses or cattle need protection from being kicked or stepped on, and feed must be kept separate since horse feeds often contain additives that are toxic to goats.

Kid-rearing areas within a multi-goat setup need particular attention. Very young kids can squeeze through fence openings that contain adults, and they are vulnerable to being stepped on or laid on by larger animals. Creep areas that allow kids to enter but exclude adults provide a safe space for rest and supplemental feeding. Heat lamps, if used for newborn kids in cold weather, must be securely mounted and positioned where bedding and curious goats cannot contact them — barn fires caused by heat lamps are a tragically common occurrence.

Guardian animals housed with goats add another layer of planning. Livestock guardian dogs, donkeys, or llamas each have different space requirements, dietary needs, and behavioral patterns that must be accommodated. A guardian dog needs a secure perimeter fence from which it cannot escape but can patrol freely. A guardian donkey should not have access to goat-specific grain or minerals. Whatever the species, the guardian's presence should reduce predator stress on the herd, not create new social conflicts within it.
