Pekin ducks are large-bodied, ground-dwelling birds that need considerably more floor space than bantam or lightweight duck breeds. As a general guideline, each adult Pekin should have a minimum of four to six square feet of interior shelter space and at least ten to fifteen square feet in an attached outdoor run. Overcrowding leads to stress, feather picking, increased ammonia buildup from droppings, and a higher incidence of bumblefoot — a painful bacterial infection of the foot pad that thrives in unsanitary conditions.

Floor-level housing is essential for Pekins because they cannot fly and are poor climbers. Unlike chickens, which readily use ramps and elevated roosts, Pekins need walk-in access to their shelter with a low threshold or a gently sloped ramp no steeper than about twenty degrees. Any ramp surface should be textured or cleated to prevent slipping, as Pekin feet are large and webbed with limited gripping ability.

Outdoor space should include both open ground and shaded areas. Pekins are sun-sensitive due to their white plumage and heavy build, making them prone to overheating in direct sunlight during warm months. Natural shade from trees or purpose-built shade structures allows the birds to thermoregulate effectively. A portion of the outdoor space should accommodate a water feature — even a simple kiddie pool or livestock trough — since access to bathing water is important for feather maintenance and behavioral well-being.

For keepers with limited yard space, movable pen systems or duck tractors offer a way to give Pekins access to fresh ground without dedicating a permanent large footprint. These portable enclosures can be shifted across a lawn or pasture every few days, distributing manure naturally and giving the birds fresh foraging opportunities while protecting the ground from becoming a muddy wasteland.

Shelters & Coops

A Pekin duck shelter does not need to be elaborate, but it does need to address a few non-negotiable requirements: predator security, ventilation, and easy cleaning. The simplest effective design is a three-sided shelter with a closable front, set directly on the ground or on a low platform. Solid walls on three sides block wind and drafts, while a ventilated opening near the roofline allows moisture and ammonia to escape without creating a direct draft at bird level.

Ventilation is arguably the single most important design consideration for duck housing. Ducks produce significantly more moisture than chickens through their droppings, their wet feathers, and their habit of splashing water inside any enclosed space they occupy. A shelter without adequate airflow will develop condensation, mold, and dangerous ammonia concentrations that damage the birds' respiratory systems. Ridge vents, soffit vents, or hardware-cloth-covered openings near the roofline provide passive ventilation that works in all weather.

Predator-proofing requires hardware cloth rather than standard chicken wire, which is too flimsy to stop raccoons, weasels, and determined dogs. All openings should be covered with half-inch hardware cloth secured with screws and washers rather than staples, which predators can pry loose. The floor of the shelter — whether dirt, concrete, or wood — should either be predator-proof itself or protected by a buried hardware cloth apron extending at least twelve inches outward from the walls to deter digging predators.

Prefabricated poultry coops marketed for ducks vary widely in quality. Many are designed primarily for chickens and may include elevated roosts, steep ramps, or insufficient floor space for Pekins. When evaluating a prefab option, keepers should prioritize ground-level access, removable or washable flooring, adequate square footage for their flock size, and ventilation features that go beyond a single small window. Custom-built shelters, even simple ones constructed from plywood and two-by-fours, often provide a better fit for Pekin-specific needs at a comparable or lower cost.

Bedding & Floor Management

Bedding choices directly affect the health, comfort, and maintenance burden of a Pekin duck shelter. Straw is the most traditional bedding material and remains a strong option — it provides good insulation, is relatively inexpensive, and creates a soft surface that protects the heavy Pekin's feet from pressure sores. Pine shavings are another popular choice, offering excellent absorbency and a pleasant smell that helps mask ammonia between cleanings.

Cedar shavings should be avoided entirely. The aromatic oils that give cedar its distinctive scent are irritating to avian respiratory systems and can cause liver damage with prolonged exposure. Similarly, sawdust — regardless of wood species — creates fine particulate matter that ducks inhale, leading to respiratory distress. Any bedding material should be free of mold, dust, and chemical treatments.

The deep litter method works well for duck housing when managed correctly. In this system, fresh bedding is layered on top of soiled bedding over time, and the lower layers begin to compost in place, generating gentle warmth that can be beneficial during winter months. The key to success with deep litter is maintaining adequate carbon-to-nitrogen balance by adding enough dry material to absorb the substantial moisture that ducks produce. When the bedding becomes compacted, wet throughout, or develops a strong ammonia odor, the entire bed should be stripped out and replaced.

Rubber stall mats placed beneath the bedding layer offer several advantages for duck housing. They provide cushioning that protects feet, create a waterproof barrier between bedding and a wooden floor, and make full cleanouts significantly easier — the bedding slides off the smooth rubber surface rather than adhering to rough wood or concrete. These mats represent a higher upfront cost but pay for themselves in reduced floor damage and cleaning time over the life of the shelter.

Water Features & Bathing Areas

Access to water for bathing is not a luxury for Pekin ducks — it is a genuine welfare need. Ducks rely on bathing to maintain the structure and waterproofing of their feathers through a process called preening, during which they distribute oil from a gland at the base of their tail across their plumage. Without regular bathing access, feather condition deteriorates, insulation is compromised, and birds become susceptible to skin irritation and parasites.

The simplest bathing setup is a rigid plastic kiddie pool or a low-profile livestock water trough. These containers are inexpensive, widely available, and easy to dump and refill — which is important, because ducks will soil their bathing water within hours of a fresh fill. Pools should be shallow enough for the ducks to enter and exit easily, with a depth of six to ten inches being adequate for adult Pekins. A textured ramp or stacked cinder blocks provide entry and exit points that prevent birds from becoming trapped.

Drainage is the critical infrastructure consideration around any duck water feature. The ground surrounding a bathing area will become saturated and muddy quickly, creating an environment that harbors bacteria and parasites. Positioning the pool on a gravel pad with a slight grade away from the shelter helps manage runoff. Some keepers install simple drain systems using garden hoses or PVC pipe to redirect wastewater to garden beds or a dedicated drainage area.

For keepers with the space and budget, a small in-ground pond or a lined stock tank with a recirculating filter provides a more permanent and lower-maintenance solution. Biological filtration using pond plants and beneficial bacteria reduces the frequency of complete water changes, though supplemental cleaning is still necessary. Any permanent water feature should include shallow entry points and escape routes to prevent drowning, particularly if ducklings or smaller breeds share the space.

Climate Considerations

Pekin ducks are hardy birds that tolerate cold weather remarkably well thanks to their dense down layer and substantial body mass. Most healthy adult Pekins can handle temperatures well below freezing without supplemental heat, provided their shelter is dry, draft-free, and bedded deeply enough to insulate them from cold ground contact. Adding heat lamps to a duck shelter introduces a serious fire risk and is rarely necessary — body heat from even a small flock will raise the interior temperature several degrees above ambient in a properly sized shelter.

Winter management for Pekins focuses primarily on keeping water accessible. Ducks must be able to drink and clear their nares at all times, and water sources freeze quickly in sub-zero conditions. Heated water bases or submersible de-icers designed for livestock use keep water liquid without the fire hazard of heat lamps. Multiple smaller waterers distributed across the run and shelter reduce the risk of a complete freeze-out.

Heat poses a greater threat to Pekins than cold. These heavy, white-feathered birds overheat quickly in direct sun, especially at temperatures above eighty-five degrees Fahrenheit. Shade structures, misters, and access to cool bathing water become essential summer infrastructure. Frozen treats — peas in ice blocks, watermelon from the refrigerator — provide both hydration and enrichment during heat waves. Ventilation in the shelter should be maximized during warm months, with hardware-cloth panels replacing any solid doors or shutters.

Wet and humid climates present ongoing challenges for duck housing because the birds themselves generate so much additional moisture. In regions with frequent rain or high humidity, shelters may require mechanical ventilation — a small, thermostatically controlled exhaust fan — to prevent condensation and mold growth. Bedding changes become more frequent in humid conditions, and outdoor run surfaces may need gravel, sand, or wood chip underlayment to prevent them from becoming permanent mud pits.

Multi-Duck & Mixed Flocks

Pekin ducks are gregarious animals that should always be kept in groups of at least three. Solitary Pekins or pairs often display signs of stress including excessive vocalization, lethargy, and loss of appetite. When planning housing for a group, scaling up from minimum space requirements is advisable — a flock of six Pekins, for example, does better with thirty to forty square feet of shelter space rather than the bare minimum of twenty-four, because the extra room reduces competition at feeders and waterers and allows subordinate birds to move away from dominant flock mates.

Housing Pekins alongside chickens is common but requires thoughtful design. The primary concern is water management — ducks will splash in and soil any waterer that chickens rely on for clean drinking water. Separating water stations or using nipple waterers for chickens alongside open waterers for ducks solves this problem. Shelter design should also account for the fact that chickens roost on elevated perches while ducks sleep on the ground, so the shared space needs to accommodate both habits without forcing either species into uncomfortable arrangements.

Integrating ducks with other waterfowl species such as geese or Muscovies is generally straightforward, as these birds share similar housing needs. Geese, however, require more space per bird and can be territorial during breeding season, so shelters and runs should provide enough room for birds to establish personal space. Muscovy ducks are strong fliers and perchers, which means enclosures housing both Muscovies and Pekins need to be covered or have walls high enough to prevent Muscovy escapes.

Drake-to-hen ratios have significant implications for housing design and flock welfare. A general guideline is one drake for every four to five hens, though some keepers successfully maintain all-female flocks for egg production without any drakes. Too many drakes in a flock leads to overbreeding and injury to hens, which then requires either separating drakes into bachelor housing or rehoming excess males. Planning for this possibility — having a secondary enclosure available — prevents a common management headache.
