Rhode Island Reds are prolific layers, and their nutritional demands reflect that productivity. A hen producing upward of 250 eggs per year requires a carefully balanced diet rich in protein, calcium, and essential vitamins. The foundation of their diet should be a quality layer feed with a protein content between 16 and 18 percent, which supports feather maintenance, muscle health, and consistent egg production. Without adequate protein, you may notice a drop in laying frequency, poor feather condition, or sluggish behavior.
Calcium is arguably the single most important mineral for any laying hen, and Rhode Island Reds are no exception. Eggshell formation draws heavily on calcium reserves, and hens that don't receive enough will produce thin-shelled or shell-less eggs and may eventually develop skeletal problems. Supplemental calcium in the form of crushed oyster shell or limestone grit should always be available free-choice alongside their regular feed, allowing each bird to regulate her own intake.
Vitamins A, D, and E play supporting roles in immune function, bone health, and reproductive performance. Most commercial layer feeds are fortified with these vitamins, but flocks that spend significant time indoors or in northern climates with limited sunlight may benefit from additional vitamin D supplementation. Fresh greens, vegetables, and occasional fruit scraps also contribute valuable micronutrients and help round out the diet naturally.
Water is often overlooked but is absolutely critical. A laying hen can drink up to a pint of water per day, and even mild dehydration leads to reduced egg output and heat stress vulnerability. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times, and during hot weather, electrolyte supplements can help maintain hydration and mineral balance.
