Foods to Avoid

Several common foods are toxic or harmful to chickens and should never be offered to Rhode Island Reds. Raw or dried beans contain phytohemagglutinin, a lectin that is highly toxic to poultry even in small amounts. Beans must be thoroughly cooked before offering. The fact that chickens will readily eat spoiled food doesn't mean they should — their willingness to eat something is not an indicator of its safety. If they appear thin or production drops, evaluate whether the feed quality is adequate and whether all birds in the flock are getting equal access.
