Leghorns are among the most prolific egg-laying breeds in the world, and that extraordinary output places significant demands on their diet. A laying Leghorn requires roughly sixteen percent protein in her daily ration, along with adequate calcium, phosphorus, and a balanced spectrum of vitamins and minerals. Without consistent nutritional support, egg quality declines rapidly — shells thin, yolks pale, and production frequency drops.
Because Leghorns are lighter-bodied birds with fast metabolisms, they burn through calories quickly despite their relatively small frame. They tend to be efficient converters of feed to eggs, but that efficiency depends on receiving the right balance of macronutrients. Protein supports feather maintenance and egg albumin production, while carbohydrates and fats provide the energy needed for their characteristically active foraging behavior.
Calcium deserves special attention with Leghorns. Each egg a hen produces draws heavily on her calcium reserves, and a bird laying nearly every day can deplete those reserves faster than her feed alone can replenish them. Supplemental calcium in the form of crushed oyster shell or limestone grit should always be available free-choice, separate from the main feed, so each bird can regulate her own intake according to her production cycle.
Vitamins A, D, and E play critical roles in immune function, eggshell formation, and reproductive health. Birds that free-range in sunlight typically synthesize adequate vitamin D on their own, but flocks kept in enclosed runs or in northern climates during winter months may benefit from feed formulations with higher vitamin D content. Electrolyte supplements can also be valuable during heat stress, which Leghorns handle somewhat better than heavier breeds but still find challenging in extreme conditions.
