Brahma chickens are one of the largest heritage breeds, and their substantial body mass drives nutritional requirements that differ meaningfully from lighter, more production-oriented birds. An adult Brahma hen typically weighs between eight and ten pounds, while roosters can exceed twelve. Maintaining that frame without excess fat requires a carefully balanced diet with adequate protein, calcium, and essential amino acids. Underfeeding a bird this size leads to feather quality issues, reduced egg production, and vulnerability to illness during colder months.
Protein is the cornerstone of a Brahma's diet. Laying hens benefit from feed containing sixteen to eighteen percent protein, while growing pullets and cockerels need slightly higher levels to support their prolonged growth period. Brahmas mature more slowly than most commercial breeds, often not reaching full size until eighteen to twenty-four months. During this extended development window, consistent access to quality protein sources ensures proper skeletal and muscular development without the joint problems that can plague heavy breeds raised on inadequate rations.
Calcium demands spike during peak laying periods, typically from late fall through spring when Brahmas are most productive. A laying hen requires roughly four to five grams of calcium per day to produce strong eggshells, and Brahmas tend toward larger eggs that demand even more mineral support. Free-choice crusite oyster shell or limestone grit should always be available separate from the main feed so individual birds can regulate their own intake. Mixing calcium directly into feed risks overconsumption by non-laying birds, which can stress kidneys over time.
Brahmas also need adequate fat and fiber in their diet, particularly during winter. Their dense feathering and large bodies burn considerable energy maintaining body temperature, even though they are considered cold-hardy. A small amount of supplemental scratch grain or whole grains offered in the late afternoon can help fuel overnight thermogenesis. However, scratch should never exceed ten percent of total daily intake, as it dilutes the nutritional density of the primary feed and can lead to obesity in these already heavy birds.
