Protein-based treats are the most beneficial category. Dried insects, including mealworms, black soldier fly larvae, and crickets, deliver concentrated protein and fat that support feather condition, egg production, and overall vitality. These are particularly valuable during the annual molt when hens temporarily cease laying and redirect nutrients toward feather replacement. Scattering dried insects in bedding also encourages natural foraging behavior.

Herbal supplements marketed for poultry have become a significant product category. Blends typically include oregano, garlic, turmeric, and various dried flowers. While some herbs have demonstrated mild antimicrobial or antioxidant properties in poultry research, the concentrations in commercial blends vary widely and the evidence for dramatic health improvements is limited. They are unlikely to cause harm and may offer modest benefits, but they are not substitutes for proper veterinary care.

Electrolyte and vitamin supplements designed for poultry drinking water can be genuinely useful during heat stress, after transport, or during recovery from illness. Australorps are cold-hardy but can struggle in sustained heat above 35 degrees Celsius. A water-soluble electrolyte powder during heat events helps maintain hydration and feed intake. Outside of stress periods, healthy hens on a balanced diet generally do not need routine water supplementation.

Foods to Avoid

Certain common foods are toxic or harmful to chickens and should never be offered to Australorps regardless of how eagerly the birds might consume them. Awareness of these hazards is especially important for keepers who share kitchen scraps with their flock, as many everyday human foods fall into the danger zone.

Members of the nightshade family pose the most frequently encountered risk. Raw green potato skins and potato sprouts contain solanine, a glycoalkaloid that causes neurological and digestive symptoms in poultry. Tomato leaves and stems contain a related compound called tomatine. The ripe tomato fruit itself is generally safe in small quantities, but the green parts of the plant should be kept out of reach, especially if Australorps free-range near a vegetable garden.

Avocado is another well-known hazard. The skin, pit, and flesh all contain persin, a fungicidal compound that causes cardiac distress and respiratory failure in birds. Even small amounts can be lethal, and there is no safe portion size. Moldy or spoiled food of any kind is dangerous because mycotoxins produced by common molds can cause liver damage, immunosuppression, and sudden death even in otherwise healthy birds.
