Australorps are prolific layers with substantial nutritional demands. A hen producing upward of 250 eggs per year requires a consistent supply of protein, calcium, and essential amino acids to sustain that output without depleting her own body reserves. Understanding the caloric and micronutrient baseline for this breed is the first step in selecting the right feed products.
Protein is the single most important macronutrient for laying Australorps. During peak production, hens need a diet containing roughly 16 to 18 percent protein. Younger pullets approaching point of lay benefit from a slightly higher protein ratio to support both growth and the onset of egg formation. Insufficient protein leads to smaller eggs, thinner shells, and eventual drops in laying frequency.
Calcium plays an equally critical role. Each eggshell requires approximately two grams of calcium, and a hen laying nearly every day can quickly exhaust her skeletal reserves if dietary calcium is inadequate. The feed itself should contain calcium at around 3.5 to 4 percent for active layers, and supplemental calcium sources should always be available on the side so individual hens can self-regulate their intake.
Beyond protein and calcium, Australorps require balanced levels of phosphorus, vitamins A, D, and E, and trace minerals including manganese, zinc, and selenium. These micronutrients support immune function, feather quality, and reproductive health. A feed that skimps on trace minerals may appear adequate in the short term but will produce noticeable declines in flock condition over several months.
