The interior should be well-ventilated, free of sharp protrusions, and bedded with straw or shavings to provide footing and absorb waste during transit. Non-slip flooring is essential, as alpacas can lose their balance during turns and stops on smooth surfaces.

Partition panels within the trailer allow you to separate animals during transport, which is particularly important for intact males that may become aggressive when stressed. Each animal should have enough space to lie down in a cushed position — the natural resting posture where all four legs are tucked beneath the body — which requires approximately four by six feet of floor space per animal. Pre-transport preparation includes withholding grain for several hours before loading to reduce the chance of digestive upset during the ride, while ensuring adequate hydration. Bring water from home for longer trips, as alpacas may refuse unfamiliar water sources. A travel kit should include halters and leads, a basic first aid kit, electrolyte supplements for hot weather travel, and emergency contact information for veterinarians along your route.

Identification & Record Keeping

Proper identification of individual animals is a management essential that supports health tracking, breeding records, registration, and biosecurity. Choose small, lightweight tags designed for small ruminants that will not weigh down the ear or catch on fencing.
