A properly fitted collar serves as the first line of identification if a Kanaani ever escapes the home, and given this breed's athleticism and curiosity, escape attempts are not uncommon. The collar should be equipped with a breakaway safety clasp that releases under sustained pressure — typically eight to twelve pounds of force — to prevent strangulation if the cat catches the collar on a branch, fence, or piece of furniture. Standard buckle collars without breakaway mechanisms are not appropriate for any cat, but the Kanaani's active climbing and jumping habits make a breakaway clasp especially critical.
Fit is the most common error in collar selection. A collar that is too loose can snag on objects or allow the cat to hook a jaw underneath it during grooming, creating a dangerous entanglement. A collar that is too tight restricts breathing and causes skin irritation or fur loss around the neck. The standard guideline is a two-finger gap between the collar and the cat's neck — enough space for comfort and slight rotation but not enough for the collar to slip over the head or catch on the jaw.
An ID tag attached to the collar should include the cat's name and at least one current phone number. Some owners also include an address or a note indicating the cat is microchipped. Slide-on tag pouches or engraved nameplates that lie flat against the collar produce less noise than dangling tags and are less likely to catch on objects during climbing. For Kanaani cats that spend time in a catio or have any potential outdoor exposure, a reflective or high-visibility collar increases the chance of being spotted in low-light conditions.
Microchipping is an essential complement to a collar because collars can be lost, removed, or broken away. A microchip is a permanent identification device implanted subcutaneously between the shoulder blades, and it can be read by any universal scanner at a veterinary clinic or shelter. Registration of the microchip with current contact information is the step most commonly neglected — the chip itself is useless without an up-to-date registration in the manufacturer's database.
