Rose-Breasted Cockatoos are among the most energetic and physically active of the cockatoo family, and their dietary requirements reflect that vitality. In the wild, Galahs forage across vast stretches of Australian grassland, consuming a varied diet of grass seeds, cereal crops, roots, green shoots, and insects. This natural diet is relatively low in fat compared to the diets of forest-dwelling cockatoos like Moluccans or Umbrellas, and replicating that balance in captivity is essential for preventing the obesity that plagues so many pet cockatoos.
Weight management is the single most important nutritional consideration for this species. Rose-Breasted Cockatoos have a well-documented genetic predisposition toward lipomas and other fatty tumors, and an overweight Galah is at significantly elevated risk for fatty liver disease, atherosclerosis, and reduced lifespan. A diet built around low-fat pellets and fresh vegetables, with seeds and nuts strictly limited, is the foundation of long-term health. Owners accustomed to feeding other cockatoo species often need to recalibrate their expectations of appropriate fat intake when caring for a Galah.
Protein requirements are moderate. Growing juveniles, breeding hens, and molting birds need somewhat higher protein levels, but the average adult Galah in a companion setting thrives on a diet providing roughly twelve to fourteen percent protein by dry weight. Excessive protein can stress the kidneys over time, particularly in older birds, so protein-dense foods like cooked eggs and legumes should be offered in measured portions rather than as dietary staples.
Calcium and phosphorus balance is critical for skeletal health and proper muscle function, especially given the species' active lifestyle. A calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of approximately two to one is considered ideal for most parrots, and Galahs are no exception. Pelleted diets formulated for cockatoos generally maintain this ratio, but owners who provide a significant amount of fresh food need to be mindful that many grains and seeds are phosphorus-heavy, which can skew the ratio unfavorably if calcium-rich foods are not offered alongside them.
