Space Requirements

Sun Conures are active, acrobatic birds that need considerably more space than their twelve-inch body length might suggest. The minimum recommended cage size for a single Sun Conure is 24 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 30 inches tall, but larger is always better. A flight cage measuring 36 by 24 by 36 inches or greater allows room for wing stretching, climbing, and short flights between perches, all of which contribute to physical and psychological health.

Bar spacing is a critical safety factor. For Sun Conures, bar spacing should be between half an inch and three-quarters of an inch. Spacing wider than three-quarters of an inch creates a risk of the bird squeezing its head through the bars, which can result in injury or escape. Horizontal bars on at least two sides of the cage are preferable because they allow the conure to climb, which is one of their primary forms of exercise.

Cage shape also matters. Rectangular or square cages provide more usable interior space than round or novelty-shaped enclosures. Round cages can cause psychological stress in some parrots because there are no corners where the bird can retreat and feel secure. The cage should be placed at chest height or slightly above in a room where the family spends time, as Sun Conures are highly social and become distressed when isolated.

Even with a generously sized cage, Sun Conures should receive several hours of supervised out-of-cage time each day. A dedicated play stand or bird-safe room provides space for flying, socializing, and exploring. The cage should be thought of as the bird's safe home base rather than its entire world.

Cage Construction & Materials

The material and build quality of a cage directly affect the safety and longevity of the enclosure. Powder-coated steel and stainless steel are the two best options for Sun Conures. Powder-coated cages are more affordable and widely available, but the coating can chip over time from the bird's beak, so inspect regularly for exposed metal. Stainless steel cages are more expensive but virtually indestructible, non-toxic, and resistant to rust, making them a worthwhile long-term investment.

Avoid cages made with zinc, lead, or brass components, as these metals are toxic to birds. Older or imported cages sometimes use zinc-plated wire or lead-based solder on joints, both of which can cause heavy metal poisoning if the bird chews on them. If you are unsure about the composition of a cage, a simple lead and zinc test kit can be used to check exposed metal surfaces before introducing the bird.

Door mechanisms should be sturdy and parrot-proof. Sun Conures are intelligent and dexterous, capable of opening simple slide-up doors and basic latches. Look for cages with locking mechanisms or add bird-safe padlocks or carabiner clips to doors. Multiple access points, including a large front door and smaller side doors, make cage cleaning and food dish access easier for the owner.

The cage tray and grate design affect daily maintenance. A removable bottom tray that slides out allows for quick cleaning without disturbing the bird. A wire grate above the tray keeps the bird separated from droppings and discarded food. Some owners prefer to remove the grate to allow foot-friendly foraging on a paper-lined tray, though this requires more frequent cleaning to maintain hygiene.

Perches & Interior Setup

Perch selection is one of the most important aspects of cage setup for a Sun Conure. A variety of perch diameters and textures promotes healthy foot development and prevents pressure sores. Natural wood perches with irregular shapes are ideal because they exercise the foot muscles as the bird adjusts its grip along the uneven surface. Safe wood types include manzanita, java wood, dragonwood, and untreated fruit tree branches such as apple or pear.

Rope perches made from untreated cotton or sisal provide a softer gripping surface and can be bent into curves or spirals to add variety to the cage layout. However, rope perches should be inspected regularly for fraying, as loose threads can entangle toes or be ingested, causing crop impaction. Replace rope perches at the first sign of significant wear.

Concrete or mineral perches serve a dual purpose by providing a rough surface that naturally files the bird's nails and beak. These should be placed in low-traffic areas of the cage, such as near a food dish, rather than as the primary sleeping perch, because their hard texture can cause foot discomfort if used for extended periods. One concrete perch per cage is generally sufficient.

Perch placement should create a logical flow within the cage. Position perches at different heights to encourage climbing and movement, but avoid placing them directly above food or water dishes where droppings would contaminate the contents. The highest perch in the cage will typically become the bird's preferred sleeping spot, so ensure it is a comfortable natural wood or rope perch rather than a hard dowel or concrete perch.

Outdoor Aviaries & Flight Enclosures

For owners with suitable outdoor space, an aviary or outdoor flight enclosure provides Sun Conures with fresh air, natural sunlight, and room for sustained flight. Outdoor enclosures should be constructed from welded wire mesh with openings no larger than half an inch to prevent predator access and escape. The frame should be built from weather-resistant materials such as powder-coated steel or aluminum, and all hardware should be stainless steel to prevent rust and zinc contamination.

Predator protection is a primary design concern. The enclosure should have a solid roof or fine mesh covering to prevent attacks from hawks, owls, and other raptors. Mesh should extend below ground level or be secured to a concrete foundation to deter digging predators like raccoons and snakes. Double-door entry systems, where you pass through one locked door before opening the flight area, prevent accidental escapes during entry and exit.

Shade and shelter within the aviary are essential. At least one-third of the enclosure should be covered to provide protection from rain, wind, and direct sun. An enclosed shelter box or attached indoor section gives the bird a retreat during bad weather or at night. Sun Conures can tolerate mild temperature fluctuations, but they are tropical birds and should not be exposed to temperatures below fifty degrees Fahrenheit for extended periods.

Natural vegetation can be incorporated into outdoor aviaries to provide enrichment and visual barriers. Non-toxic plants such as hibiscus, spider plants, and Boston ferns create a more naturalistic environment. Avoid plants treated with pesticides or fertilizers, and research the safety of any species before introducing it to the aviary, as many common ornamental plants are toxic to birds.

Climate & Environmental Control

Sun Conures originate from the tropical regions of South America and are most comfortable in temperatures between sixty-five and eighty degrees Fahrenheit with moderate humidity. In air-conditioned or heated homes, humidity levels can drop well below what is ideal for a parrot's respiratory system and feather condition. A room humidifier near the cage can help maintain humidity between forty and sixty percent, which supports healthy skin, feathers, and breathing.

Lighting is another important environmental factor. Parrots require exposure to full-spectrum lighting that includes UVA and UVB wavelengths to properly synthesize vitamin D3 and absorb calcium. If the bird does not have regular access to unfiltered natural sunlight, a full-spectrum avian lamp placed near the cage on a timer can replicate the natural light cycle. A twelve-hour light and twelve-hour dark schedule is appropriate for most of the year, with slight seasonal adjustments if desired.

Air quality in the bird's room should be carefully managed. Avoid placing the cage in kitchens where cooking fumes, especially from nonstick cookware containing PTFE, can release gases that are lethal to birds. Scented candles, air fresheners, aerosol sprays, and cigarette smoke are all respiratory irritants that should be eliminated from the bird's environment. An air purifier with a HEPA filter can help reduce airborne dust and dander.

Noise and vibration in the environment affect a conure's stress levels and sleep quality. While Sun Conures are themselves quite loud, they are sensitive to sudden, unpredictable noises such as construction, barking dogs, or slamming doors. Position the cage in a location that is socially active during the day but can be made quiet and dark at night to support a consistent sleep schedule of ten to twelve hours.

Multi-Bird Households

Housing multiple Sun Conures or mixing species in the same space requires careful planning. Two Sun Conures that have been properly bonded can often share a cage, provided the enclosure is large enough for both birds to maintain personal space. A cage appropriate for a pair should be at least 36 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 48 inches tall, with duplicate food and water stations to reduce competition and territorial behavior.

Introducing a new bird to an existing conure should be done gradually. Begin by housing the new bird in a separate cage in the same room so the birds can see and hear each other without physical contact. Over the course of two to four weeks, move the cages closer together and allow supervised interactions on neutral ground, such as a shared play stand. Watch for signs of aggression including lunging, biting, and territorial screaming before attempting to cohabitate.

Mixing Sun Conures with other parrot species requires particular caution. Sun Conures can be assertive and may bully smaller species like budgies or cockatiels, while larger parrots like macaws or Amazons could injure a conure during a conflict. Different species also have different dietary needs, sleep schedules, and disease susceptibilities that complicate shared housing. In most cases, separate cages in the same room are a safer arrangement than a shared enclosure.

Regardless of the number of birds, each individual should have its own sleeping area and dedicated food access. Overcrowding leads to stress, feather plucking, and aggression. If territorial disputes persist despite adequate space and gradual introductions, maintaining separate cages is the responsible choice. Some birds simply do not cohabitate well, and forcing the arrangement compromises the welfare of all birds involved.
