Plastic dishes are inexpensive and widely included with new cages, but they have real drawbacks. Cockatiels can chew through soft plastic, ingesting fragments that may cause digestive problems. Even harder plastics develop surface scratches that become microscopic breeding grounds for bacteria and are difficult to fully sanitize. If budget is a concern, plastic dishes can work short-term but should be replaced frequently and inspected for wear.

Water bottle dispensers designed for birds offer an alternative to open water dishes. They keep the water supply cleaner by preventing food debris, feathers, and droppings from contaminating it. However, not all Cockatiels will readily drink from a bottle, and some avian veterinarians prefer open dishes because they are easier to monitor for water intake.
