Space Requirements

Black-headed Caiques are among the most physically active parrots for their size, and their housing must reflect that energy. The minimum recommended cage dimensions for a single Caique are 24 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 30 inches tall, but larger is always better. These birds spend a significant portion of their waking hours climbing, hopping, and swinging, so vertical height combined with ample horizontal floor space is ideal.

Bar spacing is a critical safety consideration. For Caiques, bar spacing should be between 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch. Bars spaced too widely create a risk of head entrapment, while bars that are too narrow can catch toes and nails. Horizontal bar orientation on at least two sides of the cage is strongly preferred because Caiques are avid climbers and use horizontal bars as ladder rungs to traverse the cage walls.

Cage placement within the home affects your bird's sense of security and social engagement. Position the cage in a room where the family spends time regularly, but avoid placing it directly in front of windows where temperature fluctuations and the sight of outdoor predators can cause stress. Having at least one side of the cage against a wall gives the bird a sense of security while still allowing a broad view of the room.

Consider the cage as a home base rather than a permanent enclosure. Caiques need substantial out-of-cage time daily — ideally several hours — in a bird-proofed space where they can exercise, explore, and interact with their human companions. The cage should be a comfortable retreat, not a confinement unit.

Cage Construction & Materials

Cage material directly impacts both durability and your bird's safety. Stainless steel cages are the gold standard for parrot housing because they are non-toxic, resistant to rust, and extremely durable. Powder-coated wrought iron is a more affordable alternative that performs well as long as the coating remains intact. Inspect coated cages regularly for chips or flaking, which can expose bare metal and pose an ingestion risk.

Avoid cages made with zinc, lead, or brass components, as these metals are toxic to birds. Older cages, imported cages, and discount models are the most likely to contain unsafe metals. If you are uncertain about a cage's composition, a simple lead testing kit can check hardware and welds. Galvanized wire, commonly used in small animal cages, is not safe for parrots because the zinc coating can be ingested during chewing.

Door mechanisms deserve careful evaluation. Caiques are intelligent and dexterous, and many learn to open simple latch doors within days. Look for cages with locks or clips that require opposable-thumb dexterity to operate, or plan to add aftermarket cage locks. Guillotine-style doors can be dangerous if they drop unexpectedly, so spring-loaded or swing-open doors are safer designs.

A removable tray at the bottom of the cage is essential for easy cleaning. Grated floors above the tray prevent the bird from walking in its own waste, though some owners prefer to cover the grate with paper for birds that enjoy ground foraging. Pull-out trays that slide without requiring you to disturb the bird above make daily maintenance significantly easier.

Perches & Interior Layout

Perch selection and placement directly affect foot health, exercise, and overall comfort. Provide a minimum of three to four perches of varying diameters, materials, and textures. Natural wood branches in irregular shapes are ideal because they exercise the foot muscles differently at each grip point, which helps prevent pressure sores and bumblefoot. Safe wood species for bird perches include manzanita, java wood, dragonwood, and untreated fruit tree branches.

Avoid sandpaper-covered perches, which were once marketed as nail-trimming aids but are now widely recognized as harmful to foot pads. Concrete and mineral perches can serve a limited role as a single secondary perch positioned near a food station, where they help keep nails and beaks conditioned without becoming the bird's primary resting surface.

Rope perches and boing-style spiral perches add variety and appeal to Caiques' love of bouncing and swinging. Inspect rope perches regularly for fraying, and trim or replace any that develop loose threads, which can entangle toes or be ingested. Cotton and sisal ropes are the most common materials; both are acceptable when properly maintained.

Arrange perches at multiple heights to encourage climbing and movement, but avoid placing any perch directly above a food or water dish, where droppings would contaminate the contents. Leave clear flight paths within the cage so the bird can move freely between perches without obstruction. The highest perch will typically become the preferred sleeping spot, so position it in a sheltered corner of the cage.

Cage Liners & Substrate

The bottom of the cage requires a substrate that is safe, absorbent, and easy to replace. Plain newspaper, unprinted newsprint, or paper towel are the most widely recommended options because they are inexpensive, non-toxic, and allow easy visual monitoring of droppings — an important indicator of your bird's health. Droppings on white or light-colored paper reveal color, consistency, and volume changes that might go unnoticed on darker substrates.

Avoid cedar and pine shavings, which release aromatic oils (phenols) that are toxic to birds' respiratory systems. Corn cob bedding, walnut shell bedding, and kitty litter are also poor choices for bird cages. Corn cob in particular harbors mold when damp, and granular substrates can be ingested, leading to crop impaction.

Cage liners designed specifically for bird cages are available in pre-cut sheets that fit standard tray sizes. These often incorporate a moisture-wicking layer that keeps the surface drier and reduces odor between changes. While more expensive than plain paper, they offer convenience for owners who prefer a ready-made solution.

Change cage liners daily or every other day at minimum. In humid climates or during warmer months, daily changes are strongly recommended to prevent bacterial and fungal growth. Wipe down the tray itself with a bird-safe disinfectant during each change, and perform a thorough deep cleaning of the tray weekly.

Climate & Environmental Control

Black-headed Caiques originate from tropical regions of South America and are most comfortable in temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. They can tolerate brief excursions outside this range but should never be exposed to sustained cold, drafts, or extreme heat. Position the cage away from air conditioning vents, heating ducts, and exterior doors where temperature swings are most pronounced.

Humidity management is often overlooked in avian housing. Caiques thrive in moderate to high humidity levels, generally between 40 and 60 percent. In drier climates or during winter when indoor heating reduces moisture, a room humidifier placed near — but not directly aimed at — the cage can help maintain healthy humidity. Adequate humidity supports respiratory health and reduces feather dryness and excessive dander production.

Lighting plays a significant role in a Caique's hormonal regulation and overall well-being. Birds require exposure to full-spectrum lighting that includes UVA and UVB wavelengths, which support vitamin D synthesis and allow them to see the full color spectrum. If your bird's cage does not receive natural indirect sunlight for several hours daily, a full-spectrum avian light on a timer can provide the necessary wavelengths during a 10 to 12 hour photoperiod.

Air quality is critically important because birds have highly efficient respiratory systems that make them more susceptible to airborne toxins than mammals. Never use non-stick cookware, aerosol sprays, scented candles, air fresheners, or cleaning products near your bird. PTFE-coated pans heated to high temperatures release fumes that can kill a bird within minutes. An air purifier with a HEPA filter placed in the bird room is a worthwhile investment for long-term respiratory health.

Multi-Bird Households

Caiques can coexist with other birds in a household, but they are known for strong personalities and can be territorial, particularly within their own cage space. As a general rule, each Caique should have its own cage unless a bonded pair has been living together successfully. Even bonded pairs may occasionally need separation during hormonal periods, so having a backup cage available is prudent planning.

If housing multiple bird species in the same room, ensure that each bird's cage provides adequate personal space and that cage placement does not create line-of-sight stress between incompatible species. Larger parrots may intimidate Caiques visually, while smaller birds like finches or budgies can be targets of a Caique's curiosity if cages are placed too close together. Maintain enough distance between cages that each bird has a defined territory.

Shared out-of-cage time requires careful supervision. Caiques are confident and sometimes confrontational with other birds regardless of size difference, which can lead to injuries on either side. Introductions should be gradual, conducted in neutral territory, and closely monitored. Never leave a Caique unsupervised with other birds outside the cage, even those that appear to get along.

For households with multiple Caiques, providing duplicate resources reduces competition and aggression. This means separate food stations, water sources, and favored perching spots for each bird, even during supervised out-of-cage time. A play gym or stand with multiple perch levels and feeding stations can help distribute resources and reduce conflict during social time.
