Bare-Eyed Cockatoos are among the most intellectually demanding companion birds to keep properly stimulated. Their wild counterparts spend the majority of daylight hours foraging across vast stretches of Australian grassland and open woodland, manipulating seeds, digging for roots and corms, stripping bark from branches, and interacting socially with large flocks. Captive life eliminates nearly all of these natural outlets, and the resulting behavioral vacuum must be filled intentionally or the bird will fill it with self-destructive alternatives.
Feather-destructive behavior, excessive screaming, stereotypic repetitive movements, and self-mutilation are all well-documented consequences of inadequate enrichment in cockatoos. These behaviors are not character flaws or signs of a difficult bird but rather predictable responses to an environment that fails to meet the species' cognitive and physical needs. A Bare-Eyed Cockatoo without adequate enrichment is roughly equivalent to a working dog breed confined to a small apartment without exercise or mental challenges: the animal's neurology demands input that the environment is not providing.
The enrichment needs of this species are not met by simply placing a few toys in the cage and leaving them there indefinitely. Cockatoos habituate to familiar objects quickly, and a toy that fascinated the bird for three days may become invisible background furniture by day five. Effective enrichment requires regular rotation of toys, introduction of novel challenges, variation in foraging difficulty, and a mix of destructible and durable items that address different behavioral drives. The goal is not to fill the cage with plastic objects but to create an environment that demands active engagement throughout the day.
Investment in enrichment products should be viewed as a core husbandry expense on par with food and veterinary care, not as an optional luxury. Birds that receive consistent, appropriate enrichment tend to be calmer, quieter, more adaptable, and less prone to the chronic behavioral and feather problems that generate far higher veterinary and rehabilitation costs down the line. The upfront cost of maintaining a rotating enrichment program is modest compared to the cost of treating established behavioral disorders.
