Full-spectrum lighting with ultraviolet output is one of the most impactful accessories an owner can provide for a Bare-Eyed Cockatoo kept indoors. Birds perceive a broader spectrum of light than humans, including UVA wavelengths that influence their perception of plumage color, food, and social cues. UVB wavelengths drive the synthesis of vitamin D3 in the preen gland oil, which the bird then ingests during normal preening behavior. Without adequate UVB exposure, the bird cannot metabolize calcium efficiently regardless of how calcium-rich the diet is, making lighting a nutritional issue as much as an environmental one.
Avian-specific fluorescent and LED bulbs designed to produce UVA and UVB output in the 290 to 350 nanometer range are the standard solution for indoor birds. These bulbs should be mounted twelve to eighteen inches from the bird's primary perching area, without glass or plastic between the bulb and the bird since these materials filter out UVB. The fixture should run on a timer set to provide ten to twelve hours of light followed by twelve to fourteen hours of complete darkness, replicating a natural photoperiod that supports hormonal regulation and sleep quality.
Bulb replacement schedules are a commonly overlooked aspect of avian lighting. UV output from fluorescent bulbs degrades over time even though the bulb continues to produce visible light. Most avian lighting manufacturers recommend bulb replacement every six to twelve months, depending on the specific product. Running a bulb beyond its effective UV life provides visible light but no meaningful UV benefit, creating a false sense of adequate lighting. Marking the installation date on the bulb or fixture base ensures timely replacement.
Natural sunlight remains superior to any artificial alternative when it can be provided safely. Placing the bird in an outdoor cage or aviary for supervised periods of direct sunlight, even thirty minutes several times per week, provides UV exposure, fresh air, and environmental enrichment that no bulb replicates fully. Window light does not substitute, as standard glass blocks virtually all UVB. When outdoor time is impractical, a quality avian UV lamp operated consistently on a proper schedule is the next best option.
