Veterinary-specific products such as Marin and Denamarin combine silymarin with other hepatoprotective compounds like S-adenosylmethionine for enhanced liver support. For small mammal patients, compounded preparations may be necessary to achieve appropriate dosing for their small body sizes. The supplement is generally considered safe with few reported adverse effects, though it is classified as a dietary supplement rather than an FDA-approved medication.
While milk thistle is widely used and supported by substantial preclinical research demonstrating hepatoprotective effects, clinical evidence specifically in small mammal species is limited. Most dosing recommendations are extrapolated from studies in dogs, cats, and laboratory animals, combined with clinical experience.
