Revolution (selamectin) is a topical macrocyclic lactone antiparasitic medication that provides convenient, effective treatment for ear mites and various other parasites in small mammals. The medication works by activating glutamate-gated chloride channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells, causing paralysis and death of susceptible parasites including ear mites, fur mites, fleas, and certain internal parasites. Selamectin's unique pharmacokinetic properties allow topical application to provide systemic distribution, reaching parasites throughout the body including those in the ear canal.
Selamectin was developed by Pfizer Animal Health (now Zoetis) and introduced as Revolution in the United States in 1999. Originally formulated for dogs and cats, its use in exotic small mammals expanded as veterinarians recognized its efficacy and safety in these species. The medication represented a significant advancement in parasite control by combining multiple antiparasitic actions in a single, easy-to-apply topical formulation. For small mammal practice, Revolution has become a preferred treatment for ear mites due to its convenient application, broad safety margins, and effectiveness without requiring direct ear manipulation.
Revolution is available as a topical solution in unit-dose applicator tubes designed for direct application to the skin. Multiple concentration formulations exist, designed for different body weight ranges in dogs and cats. For small mammal use, the kitten/puppy formulation provides appropriate concentrations for accurate dosing in smaller patients. The topical solution is applied to the skin at the base of the neck or between the shoulder blades, where it is absorbed and distributed systemically. This mode of application is particularly advantageous for ear mite treatment, as it eliminates the need for direct ear manipulation in painful or fractious patients.
The effectiveness of Revolution for ear mite treatment in small mammals is well-established through extensive clinical experience in exotic practice.
