Mupirocin is available as a 2% ointment and 2% cream formulation, with the ointment being more commonly used in veterinary medicine. The ointment base is polyethylene glycol (PEG), which enhances drug delivery to the skin surface and provides moisture to wound sites. Some formulations use a calcium salt of mupirocin for enhanced stability. The medication is intended for topical use only and should not be applied to eyes, mucous membranes, or used systemically.
