Compounded liquid formulations allow for precise measurement of appropriate volumes for these small patients. The capsules contain the medication in a form that can be opened and mixed with food if necessary, though compounded liquids are generally preferred for accurate dosing. Zonisamide has a moderately long half-life that typically allows for twice-daily dosing in most veterinary species, making it reasonably practical for long-term home administration.
The safety profile of zonisamide in rabbits is still being characterized as the medication is relatively new to exotic animal practice. Studies have demonstrated that zonisamide can suppress seizure activity in rabbits, suggesting efficacy in this species.
