The RHDV1 vaccine works by stimulating the rabbit's immune system to produce protective antibodies against the viral capsid protein VP60, which is the primary target for neutralizing immune responses. When a vaccinated rabbit encounters the actual virus, their pre-existing antibodies can rapidly neutralize the pathogen before it establishes a productive infection. This immune memory typically develops within two to three weeks following vaccination and provides protection for approximately twelve months, necessitating annual booster vaccinations to maintain adequate immunity levels.
RHDV1 vaccines are available primarily as inactivated whole-virus preparations or recombinant subunit vaccines expressing the VP60 capsid protein. In Europe, several licensed products exist including combination vaccines that protect against both RHDV1 and myxomatosis, another serious rabbit disease. The vaccines are administered via subcutaneous injection, typically in the scruff of the neck or between the shoulder blades. Most formulations require a single initial dose followed by annual boosters, though some protocols may vary depending on the specific product and regional disease pressure.
It is essential to understand that RHDV1 vaccination does not provide cross-protection against RHDV2, a distinct viral genotype that emerged in 2010 and has become the dominant strain in many regions. Rabbits living in areas where both strains circulate require vaccination against both RHDV1 and RHDV2 to achieve comprehensive protection. Vaccination decisions should always be made in consultation with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian who understands the local disease epidemiology and can recommend the most appropriate vaccination protocol for each individual rabbit.
