Because potassium bromide is not commercially available as an FDA-approved veterinary product in the United States, it is often obtained from compounding pharmacies that prepare it in concentrations suitable for veterinary patients. The liquid formulation is particularly useful for rabbits because it allows for accurate measurement of small doses appropriate for these small patients. Potassium bromide has a very long half-life in most species, often measured in weeks rather than hours or days, which means that once-daily dosing is typically sufficient. This long half-life also means that steady-state blood levels take considerable time to achieve, requiring patience during the initial treatment period.
The safety profile of potassium bromide offers certain advantages, particularly for rabbits with liver concerns. Unlike phenobarbital and many other anticonvulsants that are metabolized by the liver, potassium bromide is not hepatically metabolized and is eliminated primarily through the kidneys. This makes it a valuable option for rabbits with liver disease or those at risk for hepatic complications from other anticonvulsants. However, potassium bromide has its own considerations, including the very long time required to achieve stable blood levels and the need for careful attention to diet, as chloride intake affects bromide levels.
