The bioavailability of pimobendan is significantly reduced when given with food, which presents a particular challenge in rabbits since their gastrointestinal systems function best with continuous food intake. Recent pharmacokinetic research specifically studying pimobendan in rabbits has provided valuable information about drug levels achieved with oral dosing, though clinical trials evaluating effectiveness in rabbit cardiac patients are still needed. Empiric dosing recommendations have been established based on clinical experience and extrapolation from other species.
Using pimobendan in rabbits requires careful consideration by a veterinarian experienced in both rabbit medicine and cardiac disease management. While the drug has shown benefits in other species and is increasingly used in rabbit patients, the evidence base specifically for rabbits remains limited compared to dogs and cats.
