Amoxicillin-clavulanate, commonly known by the veterinary brand name Clavamox and the human brand name Augmentin, is a combination antibiotic that is FATAL to rabbits and must NEVER be administered under any circumstances. This medication combines amoxicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic, with clavulanic acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor that extends the antibiotic's effectiveness against bacteria that would otherwise be resistant. While this combination makes it a powerful tool for treating infections in dogs, cats, and humans, it is absolutely lethal to rabbits due to their unique gastrointestinal physiology and dependence on beneficial gut bacteria.
The presence of clavulanic acid in this combination product does nothing to reduce the danger to rabbits. Some owners or even uninformed veterinarians might mistakenly believe that the enhanced formulation somehow modifies the drug's effect on intestinal bacteria, but this is dangerously incorrect. The amoxicillin component of Clavamox retains its full capacity to devastate the rabbit cecal microbiome, causing the same fatal dysbiosis and enterotoxemia as plain amoxicillin. The clavulanic acid merely prevents certain bacteria from inactivating the amoxicillinâit does not protect beneficial gut bacteria from the antibiotic's effects.
Clavamox is particularly dangerous because of its widespread use in veterinary medicine for dogs and cats. It is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in small animal practice, and veterinarians who primarily treat dogs and cats may reflexively reach for it when treating any small animal with a bacterial infection. Multi-pet households frequently have Clavamox on hand for canine or feline family members, creating opportunities for accidental rabbit exposure. The liquid formulation, designed to be palatable for dogs and cats, may have flavors that attract curious rabbits, increasing the risk of accidental ingestion.
The consequences of Clavamox administration to rabbits are swift and devastating. Within 24 to 72 hours of exposure, the rabbit's cecal microbiome begins to collapse as beneficial bacteria are destroyed by the amoxicillin component. Pathogenic bacteria, particularly Clostridium species, rapidly multiply in the altered gut environment and produce deadly enterotoxins. The resulting antibiotic-associated enterotoxemia causes severe diarrhea, abdominal distension, pain, systemic toxicity, and death. Even aggressive emergency treatment rarely saves rabbits who have received this medication, and those who survive typically suffer permanent gastrointestinal damage. Prevention through absolute avoidance is the only effective strategy.
