When vitamin K is depleted or its recycling is inhibited, undercarboxylated and therefore non-functional clotting factors are produced.

The injectable form provides the most rapid and reliable absorption and is preferred in emergency situations or when oral absorption may be compromised. Oral formulations are typically used for longer-term supplementation once the immediate crisis has been addressed. The safety profile of vitamin K1 in horses is generally favorable when administered at appropriate doses under veterinary supervision. Unlike synthetic vitamin K3 (menadione), which has been associated with toxicity in horses and other species, vitamin K1 has a wide margin of safety. However, rapid intravenous administration of vitamin K1 has been associated with anaphylactoid reactions in some species and is generally avoided in horses.
