The gastrointestinal complications associated with lincomycin in horses cannot be overstated. Horses are hindgut fermenters with a complex and delicate intestinal microbiome that is essential for digestion and overall health. Lincomycin and related lincosamide antibiotics such as clindamycin cause severe disruption of this microbial population, leading to overgrowth of pathogenic organisms, particularly Clostridioides difficile and Clostridium perfringens.
